Der Engländer Tony Trimmer gewann 1970 die Shell British Formula Three Championship und die E.R. Hall Trophy. Zwischen 1975 und 1978 nahm er an sechs Grand Prix der Formel 1 Weltmeisterschaft teil. Am Steuer des McLaren M23 belegte er beim regennassen 1978 BRDC International Trophy Non-Championship-Rennen auf der Silverstone Grand Prix-Strecke einen hervorragenden dritten Platz.
Obwohl die Qualifikationssitzungen trocken waren, wurde das 40-Runden-Rennen in sintflutartigem Regen gefahren, was zu mehreren Unfällen und Drehern der Fahrer führte. Die oberste Stufe des Podiums belegte Keke Rosberg. Emerson Fittipaldi wurde Zweiter. In diesem Jahr gewann Trimmer die britische Aurora F1-Meisterschaft.
