يعد هذا الكتاب من أوّل كتاب مصنّف في الحديث الصحيح المجرّد، وهو أهم و أشهر كتب الحديث الشريف، واستغرق مصنّفه في تحريره ستة عشر عاماً، وقد انتقى أحاديثه من ستمائة ألف حديث جمعها. ويعتبر أحد كتب الجوامع وهي التي احتوت على جميع أبواب الحديث من العقائد والأحكام والتفسير والتاريخ والزهد والآداب وغيرها. وقد اكتسب الكتاب شهرة واسعة في حياة الإمام البخاري فروي أنه سمعه منه أكثر من سبعين ألفاً، وامتدت شهرته إلى الزمن المعاصر ولاقى قبولاً واهتماماً فائقين من العلماء، فألفت حوله الكتب الكثيرة من شروح ومختصرات وتعليقات ومستدركات ومستخرجات وغيرها مما يتعلّق بعلوم الحديث، حتى نقل بعض المؤرخين أن عدد شروحه وحدها بلغ أكثر من اثنين وثمانين شرحاً.
