In der vorliegenden Publikation präsentiert er Hauptwerke der letzten 20 Jahre aus dem Œuvre des Malerstars. Die Bilder stammen aus bedeutenden deutschen und europäischen, öffentlichen wie privaten Sammlungen.
Rauchs Bilder sind rätselhaft, apokalyptisch. Die düsteren Traumwelten, die während des Malprozesses, ohne Vorzeichnungen und Entwürfe »zu ihm kommen«, wie der Künstler sagt, üben gewaltige Sogkraft aus. Der Betrachter sucht jedoch vergeblich, hinter das wahre Geheimnis der Kompositionen zu kommen. Die häufig an Selbstbildnisse des Künstlers gemahnenden Figuren scheinen aus der Tiefe der Zeit aufzusteigen und bieten Projektionsfläche für eine Vielzahl von Interpretationen.
