Die schlagartige Löschwirkung von ABC-Pulver beruht auf zwei Löscheffekten:
Zum einen hat Löschpulver eine antikatalytische Löschwirkung. Dadurch werden die für die Verbrennung benötigten Sauerstoffradikale in der Luft durch Pulver gebunden und das Feuerlöscher erlischt. Darüber hinaus schmilzt das Löschpulver auf dem heißen Brandgut und bildet eine sogenannte Sinterschicht. Die Sauerstoffzufuhr wird behindert und der Brand wird zusätzlich erstickt.
