Designed by the visionary Tokujin Yoshioka for Kartell, the Ami Ami chair (meaning "to weave" in Japanese) is a poetic fusion of traditional Eastern craft and Western industrial technology. While it appears to be made of delicate interlaced ribbons, it is actually a marvel of single-mold polycarbonate engineering. Yoshioka’s goal was to recreate the look and feel of a woven fabric using a rigid, high-performance plastic. The intricate cross-hatch pattern on the seat and backrest creates a play of light and shadow, giving the chair a shimmering, fabric-like quality that changes depending on the angle of the sun. The squared-off, simple lines of the frame contrast beautifully with the complex texture of the "weave," embodying the Japanese aesthetic of functional simplicity. Despite the appearance of separate strands, the entire chair is injection-molded as one solid piece, ensuring incredible structural integrity. Made from weather-resistant polycarbonate, it is perfect for a sun-drenched terrace or a modern dining room. These Ami Ami chairs are highly practical and can be stacked up to five high for easy storage.
