What Nigella is describing is the work of a super antioxidant group called ‘Betalains.’ Betalains are super powerful antioxidants that protect skin from free radical damage. Prickly Pear Seed oil is especially beneficial for balancing oilier, more congestion-prone skin types due to the high linoleic acid content. 

It's also one of the most expensive oils on the market because it is so difficult and time-consuming to produce........it takes about 1 million seeds to produce 1 litre of Prickly Pear Seed Oil.

The seeds are extracted from the fruits by hand, and then cold pressed, preserving all of the nutrients. This highly time-consuming and tedious task is undertaken by indigenous Berber women working in cooperatives in Morocco.

A cheaper version of oil is produced by macerating extracts of the fruit flowers.

Also known as Barbary fig seed oil or Indian fig seed oil, it grows wild in the South of Morocco and other arid and semi-arid regions of the globe.

This oil on its own has the aroma of fresh cut hay.
