Installation Guide

  1. Drain Gearcase Oil: Position the outboard vertically and remove the upper and lower drain/fill screws. Let all oil drain completely.
  2. Remove Lower Unit: Disconnect the shift linkage (if applicable) and remove the bolts securing the lower unit to the outboard's midsection.
  3. Disassemble Gearcase: Carefully disassemble the lower unit components, including the propeller shaft housing and driveshaft bearing housing, to access the old seals.
  4. Remove Old Seals & Gaskets: Take out all old O-rings, seals, and gaskets that are being replaced by this kit. Note their orientation.
  5. Clean Surfaces: Thoroughly clean all mating surfaces and seal cavities. Ensure they are free of old sealant, corrosion, and debris.
  6. Install New Components: Lightly lubricate the new oil seals and O-rings with marine grease. Carefully press them into place, ensuring they are seated correctly and evenly.
  7. Reassemble Lower Unit: Reassemble the gearcase components in the reverse order of disassembly. Ensure all parts are correctly aligned.
  8. Torque to Spec: Tighten all bolts and fasteners to the manufacturer's recommended torque specifications to prevent leaks.
  9. Refill with Oil: Install a new washer on the lower drain plug. Fill the gearcase with fresh lower unit oil from the bottom hole until it emerges from the top hole. Install the top plug, then the bottom plug.
  10. Check for Leaks: After refilling, allow the unit to sit for several hours and inspect for any signs of oil leakage before operating the engine.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

How do I confirm this fits my engine?
This kit is specifically for Johnson/Evinrude 85-115 HP V4 Crossflow outboards from 1973 to 1983. The best way to confirm fitment is to match your model and year from the compatibility table or cross-reference your old part numbers with Sierra 18-2692, GLM 86712, or Mallory 9-74113.

What are the signs that my lower unit seals are failing?
The most common signs are finding milky or creamy gear lube (which indicates water has mixed with the oil), discovering an oil sheen on the water surface around your outboard, or noticing visible oil leaking from the propeller shaft area.

How often should lower unit seals be replaced?
While there is no strict replacement interval, it is recommended to inspect for leaks annually. Seals should be replaced immediately if you find water in the gear oil. It is also standard practice to install a new seal kit whenever performing major service like a water pump replacement or a full gearcase rebuild.

OEM vs. Aftermarket?
This listing is an aftermarket replacement part (not an OEM component). We build to OEM specifications using comparable-grade materials. Production is done in an ISO9002-certified facility, and each batch is inspected for consistent performance.

How fast do you ship and how much does it cost?
We offer fast global shipping—typically 5–15 days worldwide—and standard shipping is free. Expedited options are available at checkout depending on your location.

This product includes a 1-year warranty against manufacturing defects under normal use. If something goes wrong, contact our support team with your order details. Returns are accepted within our standard return window (unused & in original condition); please see our policy page or reach out for instructions.

Nice shelf option
These industrial pipe shelf brackets are a great choice if you’re going for that rustic, farmhouse look. The black iron finish looks clean and modern while still giving off that classic industrial vibe. Once installed, they feel sturdy and well-built. Perfect for holding books, décor, or heavier items when paired with solid wood planks. I like the open design because it really lets whatever you’re displaying stand out. They’re also pretty versatile and work well in different spaces like living rooms, kitchens, or home offices. Just keep in mind that this is the bracket system only, so you’ll need to supply your own wood and possibly some mounting hardware depending on your setup. Overall, they’re a stylish and functional DIY option that adds a lot of character to a space.

Excellent industrial shelving hardware for the price
I bought these as a housewarming-style gift for my brother-in-law, who recently finished building an extension onto his home and finally has the space for a proper office. His family’s aesthetic leans heavily toward that cottage-meets-industrial look, and these brackets fit the brief perfectly. First impressions were excellent. The iron construction feels genuinely heavy-duty, and the machining and threading are better than I expected at this price point. The finish is a clean matte black that looks sharp without feeling overly glossy or cheap. Installation is straightforward if you’re comfortable with basic wall mounting. Because these are iron pipe components, you may find yourself making tiny adjustments with micro shims to get everything perfectly level depending on your wall and stud placement. That’s not a flaw so much as the nature of pipe-style systems. Once dialed in, though, they feel very solid. The scale is also worth mentioning. These are not subtle brackets—they’re a bit of a statement piece. That’s great if you want the shelving to become part of the room’s visual identity, but it’s something to be aware of when planning the space. One thing I actually appreciate is that they don’t include the wood shelves. Bundled wood usually drives up the cost and often isn’t the species or finish you’d want anyway. This way you can choose your own boards and tailor the look to the room—which is exactly what my brother-in-law ended up doing. Overall, a very well-executed industrial shelving system: sturdy, attractive, and surprisingly refined for the price.
