This surreal fox opens its mouth wide — to me, it screams in hysteria, though others have seen it as laughing. That duality fascinates me: one figure, two opposing interpretations. The swirling tangles connect back to earlier works like Sinking and Self Portrait with Artax, while signaling a shift away from self-portraiture and back toward the wild animal imagery that has long inspired me.
