Song is the soul of Therukoothu performances, and much of the dialogue is improvised. The Kattiakaran (stage director, in a way) and Komali (clown) are essential characters who flesh out the stories through conversation.

Traditionally performed after the sky darkens, the artists' painted faces, gilded wooden ornaments, crown and shoulder plates glitter in lamplight, bringing alive the more-than-human characters of stories based on Tamil classical literature and the Puranas.
