This one-day course introduces learners to the principles and practical techniques involved in managing and restoring established woodland.

Learners will study different woodland types, how woodland structure develops over time, and the influence of past and present management. Key topics include coppice cycles, thinning and selective management, woodland layers, and the role of tracks, rides, woodland edges and ecotones in creating and maintaining valuable habitats.

The course combines classroom and practical activities, enabling learners to apply concepts immediately through observation, discussion and hands-on tasks. Activities will focus on assessing woodland condition, identifying habitat features, and considering appropriate restoration and management options. Additional content may include deadwood management, invasive species awareness, climate resilience and balancing conservation with access. Practical activities will depend on weather and availability of materials.

Modules

By the end of the course, learners will have gained:

  • An understanding of woodland types, structure and management history
  • Knowledge of coppicing and restoration techniques
  • Awareness of how to manage edges, rides and ecotones for biodiversity
  • Confidence in assessing woodland condition and identifying management priorities
  • Practical insight into sustainable, habitat-led woodland management

Assessment

Assessment on this course will be practical and informal, designed to support learning rather than act as a barrier to participation.  Feedback will be provided throughout the course to reinforce learning and support individual development.

Item received not as pictured - beware
Item not as described. The navy version I ordered showed a colored zipper and a print pattern inside the collar in the description but the one I received is solid navy in color. Not what I wanted or ordered. It fit fine and I liked the weight of the material as it is a little heavier than another Maelreg shirt I ordered which had the same description. Be careful when ordering as the color and weight of the material is certainly not accurate.

sleeves long
I'm 5'6" and stocky but the sleeves are too long and slip over to rest half way down my hand. If your 5'9 or taller you will be fine.
