Who wants a hydrangea with weak stems? Not us - that's one of the reasons we love Cityline Venice hydrangea. Like the rest of the Cityline series, it was selected in Germany for its strong stems, glossy, disease-resistant foliage, and pure, saturated flower colors. Each large floret of its round mophead blooms has distinctively-shaped petals (technically sepals) that give it a dramatic presence that far outshines other bigleaf hydrangeas.
What makes Cityline Venice different from other bigleaf hydrangeas?
- Florets take on an unusual shape that's very distinctive
- Very dark green foliage resists disease
Details:
Name: Hydrangea macrophylla 'Venice Raven'
Hardiness: USDA zones 5-9
Height x width: 1-3'
Light: Full to part sun
Soil: Evenly moist but well-drained soils are best. A 2-3" layer of shredded bark mulch is recommended in all areas, all year round.
Pruning: Blooms on old wood; do not trim or cut back, but dead wood may be removed in early spring
Water: Average to high water needs. Though big leaf hydrangeas cannot grow in wet soils, they can become drought stressed readily and should be watered regularly. Plants in full sun and/or warmer climates will need more water than those in less sun and/or cooler areas.
Fertilizer: Fertilize once in early spring with a rose fertilizer if desired.
Bloom time: Early to mid summer.
Bloom color: Flower color depends on soil pH; in acidic sites, look for a deep blue-purple, and a bright, rich pink in neutral to alkaline ones.
Uses: A classic choice for including in gardens and landscaping, it also makes a nice choice for low hedges and containers.
