Dholak Lessons with Devin – Intro to Dholak (Version 1) is a comprehensive online dholak course designed to teach students how to play dholak from beginner level through advanced accompaniment techniques. This self-paced online dholak curriculum focuses on practical accompaniment used in bhajans, devotional music, and live performance settings.

Whether you are completely new to the instrument or looking to strengthen your foundation, this course teaches the essential techniques and patterns required to confidently accompany singers and musicians on dholak.

Start Learning Dholak from Scratch

The opening lessons of the curriculum are designed so anyone can learn dholak from the beginning, even if they have never played percussion before. Students will learn:

  • Proper dholak hand technique

  • Foundational rhythmic understanding

  • How to structure accompaniment patterns

  • How to confidently play thekas, mukdas, laggis and more!

These introductory lessons create a strong foundation before moving into practical accompaniment patterns used in real musical settings.

Master Essential Keherwa Taal Dholak Patterns

After the introductory lessons, the course moves directly into practical accompaniment material centered around Keherwa Taal, one of the most widely used rhythms in devotional and folk music.

In Version 1, students will learn:

  • 54 Bhajan Thekas in Keherwa Taal

  • 24 Mukdas

  • 2 Laggis

The patterns progress gradually from beginner to intermediate, professional, and advanced levels, ensuring that students continuously build skill, control, and musical understanding.

These patterns have been carefully curated by Devin to efficiently teach the rhythms most commonly used in real-world dholak accompaniment.

By the end of Version 1, students will have the knowledge and material required to confidently perform Bhajan accompaniment on dholak.

Version 2 – Expanding to the Full 100 Bhajan Thekas

Version 2 expands on the foundation built in Version 1 and completes the full 100 Bhajan Thekas in Keherwa Taal.

At a glance, they really do resemble real gold flatware. They’re also surprisingly solid. These are not flimsy, fast-food-style plastic utensils. The forks feel sturdy in your hand and can easily handle everything from salad to steak—no bending tines or snapping. Once they’re on the table, you wouldn’t know they’re plastic until you pick them up. They only downside to them is that the design to have them come to a point at the end of the handle made it slightly uncomfortable in my hand while using it. They’re an excellent option for weddings, parties, or any event where you want an elegant table setting without using real metal flatware. They also hand-wash well and can be reused multiple times, which makes them a nice choice even for at-home entertaining when you want something that looks special without the worry.

Surprisingly sturdy at 3¢ each, better than expected for a large 1,000-count bulk spoon box 🥄📦
📝 Summary For about 3 cents per spoon, I expected these to be extremely flimsy. They are still disposable plastic spoons, but they are stronger than I expected and a very solid value for a 1,000-count box. ✅ Pros 　　　•　Very low cost per spoon. 　　　•　Stiffer than many bargain disposable spoons. 　　　•　Reinforced shape helps the handle resist bending. 　　　•　Useful for parties, lunches, quick meals, and everyday convenience. 　　　•　Serious value for the money if you use disposable utensils often. ⚠️ Cons 　　　•　Not as sturdy as metal utensils or thick premium plastic spoons. 　　　•　Still disposable, so the waste tradeoff is worth thinking about. 　　　•　Hard frozen foods may still need a little care. 🥄 Review At this price per spoon, I expected these to feel like the cheapest, flimsiest spoons possible. They actually surprised me. The design helps a lot. The handle has a shaped, reinforced feel, and the spoon does not bend as easily as many low-cost disposable spoons I have used. Exactly why I expected
I ordered the Amazon Basics disposable white spoons primarily for the office. We have veteran events to inform and educate about veterans benefits. Funding is limited, so I try to save money where possible and these spoons were a great value! They come out to less than 3 cents each and they will last over a year. They are the same quality and feel of the plastic spoons we previously bought at the local grocery store, but due to the larger quantity it is a much better value. I decided to break the big box down into gallon zip lock bags, which made storage easier in my case. This also allowed them to be easier transported and to track usage better. We previously would buy just enough for each event, but that was a hassle with the higher costs and the trips to the grocery store. They are sturdy and hold up to use in thick dips. I would recommend these for anyone trying to save som money and spend less trips to the grocery store.
