Adcom GFA-585se Stereo Power Amplifier at Vinyl Sound Toronto Canada

The Adcom GFA-585se is a high-performance stereo power amplifier built to deliver authority, precision, and musical transparency in equal measure. A pure Class A/B design with parallel-driven topology, it delivers 450 watts per channel into 8 ohms with the ability to drive speaker loads down to 2 ohms with complete stability and composure. Available at Vinyl Sound in Toronto, Canada.

Class A/B Design and High-Current Output

Every component inside the GFA-585se was refined and upgraded during development to create a more capable, more revealing amplifier. The result is lower distortion, better dynamic range, improved damping factor, and greater stability and separation of individual instruments across the soundstage. Ultra-low ESR electrolytic capacitors and UL-approved FR-4 printed circuit boards reflect the same uncompromising approach applied throughout. At the core of the GFA-585se's power delivery are 14 pairs of TO-3-type metal-cased bipolar output transistors per channel, arranged in a triple-Darlington configuration. This topology ensures very efficient power delivery to reactive loads regardless of the phase angle between voltage and current, making the GFA-585se one of the most speaker-friendly high-power amplifiers available at its price point.

Sonics and Soundstage

The GFA-585se strikes a compelling balance between impact and finesse. Bass is deep and controlled, the midrange is open and expressive, and the highs extend smoothly with natural detail. The result is a presentation that feels powerful yet refined, with a wide, stable soundstage that holds together at any volume level.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Adcom GFA-585se?

The Adcom GFA-585se is a stereo power amplifier rated at 450 watts per channel into 8 ohms and 600 watts per channel into 4 ohms, both channels driven simultaneously. It uses a pure Class A/B parallel-driven topology with 14 pairs of TO-3 bipolar output transistors per channel in a triple-Darlington configuration, and is bridgeable to 1000 watts mono into 8 ohms. It is available at Vinyl Sound in Toronto, Canada.

What is the power output of the Adcom GFA-585se?

The GFA-585se is rated at 450 watts per channel into 8 ohms and 600 watts per channel into 4 ohms in stereo mode, with both channels driven simultaneously at less than 0.05% THD across the full 20Hz to 20kHz audio band. In bridged mono mode it delivers 1000 watts into 8 ohms, making it equally suited to demanding stereo systems and high-output single-channel applications such as powered subwoofer integration.

Can the GFA-585se drive 2-ohm speaker loads?

Yes. The GFA-585se is designed for unconditional stability into loads as low as 2 ohms in stereo mode. Its 14 pairs of TO-3 bipolar output transistors per channel and triple-Darlington circuit topology maintain stable, low-distortion output even when the speaker load presents a highly reactive impedance with significant phase angles between voltage and current. In bridged mono mode, a minimum speaker impedance of 4 ohms is recommended.

What does bridging mean for the GFA-585se, and when should I use it?

Bridging combines both channels of the GFA-585se into a single high-power mono output, delivering 1000 watts into 8 ohms. This is useful when driving a single high-power loudspeaker, a passive subwoofer requiring maximum headroom, or a center channel speaker in a high-output home theater system. When bridged, the minimum recommended speaker impedance is 4 ohms. A second amplifier would be required to power additional channels when operating in bridged mono mode.

What is the "se" upgrade in the GFA-585se compared to the original GFA-585?

The GFA-585se is an upgraded and refined version of the original GFA-585. During development, every component was reviewed and improved to achieve lower distortion, better dynamic range, improved damping factor (greater than 800 versus the original's specification), and greater stability across the soundstage. Ultra-low ESR electrolytic capacitors and UL-approved FR-4 printed circuit boards were adopted as part of this refinement program, resulting in measurably and audibly improved performance across the full operating range.

What is the damping factor of the GFA-585se, and why does it matter?

The GFA-585se has a damping factor greater than 800 from 20Hz to 20kHz, which is exceptionally high for a power amplifier of this class. Damping factor describes how effectively the amplifier can control the motion of the loudspeaker cone after a transient signal. A high damping factor translates to tighter, more controlled bass reproduction and improved transient accuracy, particularly with large woofers and bass-reflex loudspeaker designs that can be prone to overhang and bloom when driven by amplifiers with lower damping.

The ONLY Bones/Chews Dog-Approved in Our House!
Flavor Name: Original Jerky, Size: X-Large
We have 2 purebred pitbulls, both adult males who weigh between 75-80 pounds. We bought a huge assortment of bones, treats, and chews when we first got our boys (they're rescues, and we got them at the same time). They strongly favored these Marrowchews, even over other, imitation products of different brands. We actually didn't know they had marrow INSIDE the bones for quite some time, and as soon as we realized that, we understood why our dogs loved them so much! The way the marrow is embedded in the bone, but a ways in from either end, is really clever. The dogs can surely smell it long before they can taste it, and it seems to keep them really interested and motivated at first. Then, they get to the actual marrow, and they are working on these bones non-stop until it's completely gone. The way they are made is also really unique; they sort of 'splinter' as they get chewed, and it actually helps with doggie dental care, cleaning the teeth and massaging the gums. There is no mess with these bones, no pieces flaking or chunking off, anything like that. They are also completely odor-free. With other bones/chews, they'll start them, but lose interest really quickly, and never so much as look at those again. These specific Marrowchews are truly the ONLY ones that keep our dogs interested, and for a significant amount of time, too. They'll work on the XL sizes daily throughout the day for a total of 1-2 hours, and they last a couple of months, easily. And keep in mind, these are pretty aggressive chewers! HIGHLY recommend these, and the price on Amazon is the best anywhere!

Durable and fun
Flavor Name: Beef, Size: Medium/Large
I have two dogs and I only bought one bone over a month ago. They’ve both been chewing on it and it’s held up really well. I wouldn’t say they’re aggressive chewers, but they do like chewing. They’re still picking it up and using it, so they’re definitely not bored with it. As for me, it’s been a pretty great buy.

Tough Chew!
Flavor Name: Original Jerky, Size: Medium
Sporn is a very tough chew. We have a 22pound Beagle 1 year old. She spend little time working on the Hard plastic that encases the marrow. Now I don't doubt there are some dogs that would chew this mindlessly for the small marrow treat. It is not for my pup! She needs more play to keep at it. A TOUGH CHEW would be better slightly less thick and more marrow inside. I attached a string and had her whirly birding around chasing this bone but once we let go she has a 30 second interest. Not for every dog maybe for the big guys 100 lb brutus !

Dogs are enjoying it!
Flavor Name: Beef, Size: Medium/Large
I just got this bone today but so far my dogs love it. They have been playing with it and alternating who’s chewing on it. My 8 month old got the blue rubber piece off in about 10 minutes, so if that’s the primary factor for purchasing, note that.

I have a 10 m.o. Aussie who is in chronic chew stage. I was hoping that this bone would last longer than Benebone. Watching pup chew her little heart out, I noticed she was tearing off little pieces of the plastic bone and swallowing them. Threw out. Wish I'd returned. NOT RECOMMENDED FOR SUPER CHEWERS
