Goniopora corals, commonly called Flowerpot corals, are large-polyp stony (LPS) corals within the genus Goniopora. They are known for their beautiful, flower-like polyps that extend gracefully from a hard skeleton, creating a mesmerizing, waving motion in the current.

  • Appearance: Each polyp resembles a daisy flower—long, slender tentacles with small “petals” at the tips.
  • Colors: Found in vibrant shades of green, pink, red, purple, yellow, and even blue.
  • Growth Form: Typically dome- or branching-shaped colonies.
  • Natural Habitat: Shallow, turbid lagoons and reef flats across the Indo-Pacific region.

Care Requirements

Goniopora corals can be moderately challenging to keep, as they are sensitive to water quality and lighting. However, newer aquacultured varieties are more resilient.

1. Lighting

  • Type: Moderate to strong lighting (PAR ~80–150).
  • Sources: LED, T5, or metal halide lighting.
  • Placement: Mid-level in the tank; avoid direct, intense light that can bleach the polyps.

2. Water Flow

  • Flow: Moderate, indirect, and steady.
  • Strong flow can cause polyps to retract or tear, while too little flow can lead to detritus buildup.

3. Water Parameters

Parameter Ideal Range
Temperature 75–80°F (24–27°C)
Salinity 1.024–1.026 SG
pH 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity 8–9.5 dKH
Calcium 400–450 ppm
Magnesium 1250–1350 ppm
Nitrate <10 ppm
Phosphate <0.05 ppm

Feeding

While Goniopora has photosynthetic zooxanthellae, it also benefits from direct feeding.

  • Foods: Phytoplankton, zooplankton, rotifers, or specially formulated coral foods (like Reef Roids).
  • Frequency: 2–3 times per week.
  • Gently target feed with a turkey baster or coral feeder when polyps are fully extended.

Placement Tips

  • Keep away from aggressive neighbors; tentacles can sting or be damaged by others.
  • Avoid areas prone to sediment accumulation.
  • Place in a stable environment where lighting and flow are consistent.

Common Issues

Problem Cause Solution
Polyps not extending Too much light/flow or poor water quality Adjust placement and check parameters
Tissue recession Nutrient deficiency or bacterial infection Maintain parameters, feed regularly
Algae growth Excess nutrients or poor flow Improve filtration, adjust lighting duration

🌱 Propagation

  • Propagation is delicate; typically done by careful fragging of healthy colonies using bone cutters and iodine dips to prevent infection.

Great lotion for very dry skin
Style: Updated Formula
I had a laser done on my face and the products they gave me weren't working. This came highly recommended so I gave it a try. I'm very glad I did! It moisturized my face really well without appearing greasy. I used the rest when my face got dry from winter (in th midwest). Felt very rich and smooth. Medium thickness.

returned- for now
Style: Updated Formula
I was using the lotion version of this for about a year, then went to the balm for more hydration. However, it seems to be breaking me out. I think because it's spring, im not needing as much occlusion as i did during winter. I'm gonna go back to the lotion formula, then pick this up again next winter. It is a little hard to spread, but I spray the avene mineral water on, let it dry slightly, and press the balm into my skin when its still wet. That helps thin the balm just enough to rub in. Otherwise, it can actually feel kind of rough!
