The inclusion of historic deceased poets in the Black Spirits program was a historic first in the 20+ years of CBA's Broadside Reading Series, which previously had only featured contemporary living poets. In addition to Cortinez's broadside for Brathwaite, CBA artists Yusuf Hassan and Alix Pentecost-Farren designed and produced broadsides for historic deceased poets Amiri Baraka and Ai, respectively, for the Black Spirits program.
