Audiolab DC Block Direct Current Blocker at Vinyl Sound Toronto Canada

The DC Block is a single-component mains power optimisation device from Audiolab (Cambridge, United Kingdom), available at Vinyl Sound in Toronto, Canada. A compact, inline solution to two of the most pervasive power quality problems in home audio, the DC Block combines a DC offset blocker that corrects the asymmetrical AC mains waveform with a high-performance audio-class RFI/EMI filter that removes both differential-mode and common-mode noise from the supply reaching a single connected component. Simply plugged between a wall socket and the IEC power input of any audio or AV component, it corrects DC contamination that saturates toroidal transformers, eliminates mechanical hum, and lowers the noise floor — with audible results including reduced grain, improved clarity, better-defined bass, and more open treble. Rated at 600VA peak load and compatible with amplifiers up to 2 x 150W stereo or 1 x 300W mono, the DC Block is universally compatible with 100-240V mains supplies and supplied complete with both input and output cables for immediate use.

DC on the Mains: The Problem and the Solution

The mains supply in a typical home should deliver pure AC — a perfectly symmetrical sine wave alternating between positive and negative phases at equal amplitude. In practice, the proliferation of asymmetrical electrical loads in the modern home — dimmer switches, variable-speed kitchen appliances, LED drivers, and computer switch-mode power supplies — biases the AC waveform so that the positive and negative half-cycles are no longer equal, introducing a DC voltage component into the supply. Toroidal transformers of the type used in virtually all high-quality audio amplifiers, including every Audiolab integrated and power amplifier, are acutely sensitive to this contamination. Even less than 500mV of DC voltage — entirely typical in an average household supply — is sufficient to partially saturate the transformer core. Saturation causes the transformer to draw more current than normal, reduces its efficiency, introduces noise into the audio signal, and in many cases produces the audible low-frequency mechanical vibration that audiophiles recognise as transformer hum. The Audiolab DC Block intercepts this problem before it reaches the amplifier: its DC blocking and cancellation circuit corrects the offset and rebalances the sine wave, allowing the toroidal transformer to operate symmetrically as designed.

Dual-Action RFI/EMI Filtration and Sonic Benefits

Beyond DC correction, the DC Block contains a high-performance audio-class filter circuit that addresses the full spectrum of mains contamination present in a modern domestic environment. Differential-mode noise — generated between the live and neutral conductors by the cheap switch-mode power supplies used in phone chargers, televisions, LED lighting, and computing equipment sharing the same ring main — is suppressed within the filter stage. Common-mode noise — introduced to both conductors by airborne electromagnetic interference from Wi-Fi routers, Bluetooth devices, and mobile phones in the home — is addressed simultaneously. Together, these two filtration modes reduce the noise floor of whatever component the DC Block feeds. Audiolab describes the audible result as reduced grain, improved clarity, better-defined and more controlled bass, and a more open, airier treble presentation — improvements that compound progressively as additional DC Block units are added to other components in the system. Audiolab recommends prioritising the integrated amplifier or power amplifier as the first unit to treat, as the toroidal transformer in the amplifier is the component most directly harmed by DC contamination and most immediately improved by its removal.

Key Features

  • DC Offset Blocking and Cancellation: Corrects DC voltage contamination on the AC mains supply that saturates toroidal transformers in audio amplifiers, causing degraded sonic performance and audible mechanical vibration.
  • High-Performance Audio-Class RFI/EMI Filter: Dual-action filtration suppresses differential-mode noise from switch-mode power supplies and common-mode noise from Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and mobile phone interference sharing the same mains supply.
  • 600VA Peak Load Rating: Compatible with amplifiers up to 2 x 150W stereo or 1 x 300W mono, covering the full Audiolab integrated and power amplifier range including the 9000A and 9000P.
  • Single-Component Inline Design: Plugs directly between a wall socket and the IEC power input of one audio or AV component — no rack space, no multiple outlet distribution, no complex installation required.
  • Audible Noise Floor Reduction: By correcting DC offset and removing RFI/EMI contamination, the DC Block lowers the system noise floor with results described as reduced grain, improved clarity, better-defined bass, and more open treble.
  • Scalable System Treatment: Multiple DC Block units can be used simultaneously across different components in a system — preamplifier, DAC, CD transport, streamer — with each additional unit delivering incremental improvements in overall system performance.
  • Universal Voltage Compatibility: Rated for 100-240V at 50/60Hz, fully compatible with Canadian 120V/60Hz and US mains standards without modification.
  • Compact Inline Form Factor: At 113 x 59 x 140mm and 0.7kg, the DC Block fits discreetly behind any component in a rack or shelf system without occupying shelf space of its own.
  • Both Cables Supplied: Mains input cable and IEC output cable are included in the box for immediate out-of-box installation.
  • Compatible with All Audio and AV Components: Suitable for use with amplifiers, preamplifiers, integrated amplifiers, CD players, DACs, streamers, and AV processors — any component with an IEC mains input.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Audiolab DC Block?

The Audiolab DC Block is a compact inline mains power optimisation device that combines DC offset blocking with high-performance audio-class RFI/EMI filtration for a single connected audio or AV component. It corrects DC voltage contamination on the household AC supply that saturates toroidal transformers in amplifiers, causing degraded performance and mechanical hum, while simultaneously suppressing differential-mode and common-mode noise from modern domestic interference sources. It is rated at 600VA peak load and compatible with amplifiers up to 2 x 150W stereo or 1 x 300W mono.

What is the difference between the Audiolab DC Block and the DC Block 6?

The Audiolab DC Block is a single-component inline device that treats one audio or AV component at a time, plugging directly between a wall socket and the IEC input of that component. The DC Block 6 is a six-outlet rack-format unit that treats up to six components simultaneously from a single mains connection, adding overload protection and a front-panel OLED voltmeter display. Audiolab recommends starting with the DC Block on the amplifier for the greatest single-component benefit, then expanding with additional DC Block units or upgrading to the DC Block 6 to treat a complete system.

Which component in my system should the DC Block be connected to first?

Audiolab recommends using the DC Block with the integrated amplifier or power amplifier as the first priority. The toroidal transformer in an amplifier is the component most directly affected by DC contamination on the mains — it is most susceptible to saturation, most likely to produce audible mechanical hum, and most immediately improved by DC correction. Source components, preamplifiers, and DACs can benefit from additional DC Block units, with each further unit delivering incremental improvements to the overall system noise floor.

Will the Audiolab DC Block work with a high-power amplifier like the 9000A or 9000P?

Yes. The DC Block is rated at 600VA peak load and is compatible with amplifiers up to 2 x 150W stereo or 1 x 300W mono. The Audiolab 9000A delivers 100W per channel into 8 ohms and the 9000P delivers 100W per channel stereo or 300W bridged mono — both fall within the DC Block's compatibility rating under normal listening conditions, where programme material rarely sustains peak power for extended periods.

Does the Audiolab DC Block work with Canadian mains voltage?

Yes. The DC Block is rated for 100-240V at 50/60Hz and is fully compatible with the 120V/60Hz mains standard used in Canada and the United States. No voltage conversion, adapter, or modification is required for use in Toronto, Canada or anywhere in North America.

Can I use multiple DC Block units across my entire system?

Yes, and Audiolab specifically recommends this approach for maximum benefit. Each additional DC Block unit added to a preamplifier, DAC, CD transport, or streamer delivers incremental improvements to the overall system noise floor beyond the primary benefit gained at the amplifier. For listeners who want to treat a full six-component system simultaneously from a single mains connection, the Audiolab DC Block 6 offers equivalent dual-action DC blocking and RFI/EMI filtration across six outlets in a rack-format chassis.

Chuckit medium rebound balls
Size: Medium
My 8 month old German shepherd dog loves these balls. They are easy to throw, they bounce great, they are very chewable! She keeps one in her mouth most of the time. It satisfies her need to chew and she does not chew other things. She drops it in the water and lets the hole fill up and drinks that way. The only problem that has caused is suction in her mouth and difficulty in dislodging it for her. However, she would be lost without it!

These are definitely indestructible
Size: Medium
Both of my dogs can destroy a ball in a matter of minutes if I let them play with them (supervised) as is. Well not with these balls. They are the ONLY ones I have found that are 100% indestructible. Please only let your dogs play with these as a toy when supervised though. They go really far when throwing them, so both dogs get a good amount of running and exercise with these. I also bought these because they have the hole in the middle of the ball which is very important in the event that a dog gets one stuck at the back of their throat. This allows them to breath unlike those without this hold. It's an unlikely event, but as dog owners, we all need to be aware of this and educate ourselves on what to do if this SHOULD happen. This isn't a scare tactic, nor a reflection of this particular brand, it can happen with any type of ball. My two dogs are about 45ish lbs and the size is perfect for them, I don't want anything smaller than this. They love them. There is no annoying squeak. Really easy to wash after use. Some balls take forever to get the slimy saliva off, but these don't.

Love this set!!!
Size: Medium (2.5"), Style: Fetch Pack 1
I was trying to figure out which of the many different balls this company offers, and I was getting frustrated but then i was SOOOO happy to see they had multiple sets that had multiple of the different balls they offer!! I bought this set and the other set they offer, but this one was my favorite and I think my dogs too! The orange ball works great and bounces just high enough that it doesn’t clear our patio wall, but enough for him to go and jump up to retrieve. But the glow in the dark ball is his favorite! Both me and my pomsky were blown away how we brought the glow in the dark ball outside just as the sun was going down, and when we brought it back inside it was BRIGHT AND GLOWY!!! Even with the sun going down and not much light left!! He loves to play with it in the house after it’s all glowy from the sun. Sometimes we even glow it up under a light inside the house if it’s dark outside, and he will play with it outside in the dark haha he loves it!!! And I think it’s pretty cool too!! All of the balls this company overs are VERY durable! We realized early on that we cannot give our dog regular tennis balls cuz his favorite thing to do is tear the outside fabric off!! So we were trying to figure out what company has the best balls for dogs so they can’t sit there and try to pry them apart, and we found this company!! We have already bought from them about 3 times and all of their balls are durable and bounce how they say they will bounce!! They have the super bouncers and the glow in the dark one and the one with angles that will bounce in different directions and the ones you can throw REALLYY far! Overall, all the balls from this company are very durable, bounce really good, and keep my dog occupied without allowing him to sit there and tear it apart!!! Which i love cuz I do not like when he stops playing with us to sit there and try to take off the fabric, cuz then he could swallow it! So always buy the balls from this company!!! They are the best and most durable!!!! Also plenty soft for your dogs mouth so they can chew on it a bit and it won’t hurt their teeth/gums!
