Installation Guide

  1. Disconnect the battery and ensure the stern drive is safely supported before beginning work.
  2. Remove the stern drive unit from the transom assembly following your service manual procedures.
  3. Locate the existing gimbal housing studs on the transom plate or gimbal housing.
  4. Carefully remove the old studs using the appropriate removal tool or stud extractor. Inspect the threads in the housing for damage.
  5. Clean the threaded holes thoroughly with a wire brush and solvent to remove debris, corrosion, or old thread-locking compound.
  6. Apply a marine-grade thread-locking compound to the threads of the new studs to prevent loosening under vibration.
  7. Thread each new stud by hand into the gimbal housing until finger-tight, ensuring proper alignment.
  8. Torque the studs to the manufacturer's specified torque setting using a calibrated torque wrench.
  9. Reinstall the stern drive unit, ensuring all mounting hardware is properly aligned with the new studs.
  10. Tighten all mounting nuts evenly in a cross-pattern to the correct torque specification.
  11. Reconnect the battery and perform a visual inspection to confirm all fasteners are secure.
  12. Conduct a test run to verify proper installation and operation of the stern drive system.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

Q: How do I confirm this fits my stern drive?
A: Verify that your Mercruiser stern drive is an Alpha Gen II, Bravo I, Bravo II, or Bravo III model. Cross-reference the OEM part numbers (16-866563, 16-818834, 818834, 866563) with your service manual or the existing studs.

Q: What are the signs that gimbal housing studs need replacement?
A: Common indicators include visible corrosion or rust on the studs, stripped or damaged threads, difficulty removing or tightening mounting nuts, or excessive play in the stern drive mounting.

Q: Can I reuse old studs if they look okay?
A: It's not recommended. Gimbal housing studs experience high stress and vibration, and even minor thread wear can compromise the integrity of the stern drive mounting.

Q: Should I use thread locker on these studs?
A: Yes, apply a marine-grade medium-strength thread-locking compound to prevent the studs from loosening due to vibration and thermal cycling.

Q: OEM vs. Aftermarket?
A: This listing is an aftermarket replacement part (not an OEM component). We build to OEM specifications using comparable-grade materials.

Q: How fast do you ship and how much does it cost?
A: We offer fast global shipping—typically 5–15 days worldwide—and standard shipping is free.

Q: What is your warranty and return policy?
A: This product includes a 1-year warranty against manufacturing defects under normal use.

Weird Toe-Hole Not Pictured for Product
These socks arrived with a super weird toe-hole that is certainly not pictured on the product photo. If you're over 8, your big toe ain't fitting in that hole. Unless... it finds its way partially into the hole while sleeping and you awake in the middle of the night from startling big toe-pain. Alas, all is not lost! It is super easy to *carefully* cut the toe-hole seam. The result: The pair of toe free socks you thought you purchased in the first place.

Waste of money...
The concept is interesting, however this particular product is a fail. There is not enough elastic/support and the seam by your toes moves quite a bit when you walk allowing the material to swallow your toes and can bunch up under the pad of your foot. Very uncomfortable and annoying. Don't waste your money, these socks belong in the trash!

This sock has a seem between 2 toes -very uncomfortable.
These are exactly the socks I needed to wear after breaking my foot, but there is a big, thick seam sewn in, between my big toe and the next toe. Extremely uncomfortable. I had to use a seam ripper to remove the threads on these socks, so I could wear them. We were leaving on a 4-week trip the next morning, I had no time to return them.
