Martha Visser't Hooft (née Hamlin) (1906-1994) was an American painter and teacher. She was known for her modernist paintings, as well as contributions to artists societies in Buffalo, New York.

Education

Visser't Hooft left for Paris in 1920 to study art at the Académie Julian. She left for New York in 1926 to study at the Parsons School of Design, shortly after switching to the John Murray Anderson School of Theater Design. During this time, she had an affair with the Russian artist Boris Grigoriev, although there are conflicting reports of whether this happened in New York or Paris.

Early career

Following her schooling, Visser't Hooft travelled with her parents and sister, Mary Hamlin Goodwin, to Taos, New Mexico in 1928. Ultimately, her sister would settle in Taos with her family, where she would become a member of the Taos Art Colony. Visser't Hooft subsequently returned on several occasions to visit her, meeting artists such as Georgia O'Keeffe, Andrew Dasburg, and Frieda Lawrence. At this time, she also made several paintings of the landscape.

Mid-career

In 1933, Visser’t Hooft co-founded the Patteran Society, created as a progressive arts society in Buffalo.

Through the late 1940s and 1950s, her work exhibited internationally through the Contemporary Arts Gallery in New York.

From 1956 to 1958 she taught at the University of Buffalo.

Late career

A solo retrospective of Visser't Hooft's paintings and drawings was held in 1973 at the Charles Burchfield Center. Her work was later exhibited in the same venue as part of a Patteran Society group show in 1975.

In 1991, a major retrospective of her works was held at the David Anderson Gallery in Buffalo. For this show an illustrated catalogue was produced by The Poetry/Rare Books Collection and The State University of New York at Buffalo. Essays were contributed by Robert J. Bertholf and Albert L. Michaels, and included commentary by the artist.

Collections

Visser't Hooft's paintings are collected across the United States. Public collections include the Albright Knox Art Gallery, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Burchfield Penney Art Center, and the Columbia Museum of Art.

Legacy

Her archives are held by the Burchfield Penney Art Center in Buffalo, New York.

The most amazing blanket EVER!!!
I just got this yesterday and I’m obsessed already. It’s the softest thing I’ve ever touched. The reverse side is also a super soft velour-like feel. I got the Marble Charcoal Grey in 60x80. It looks exactly like the photos and it’s truly a bubble design too. Looks so good draped across my bed. And it’s HEAVY! Literally feels like a weighted blanket on top of being unbelievably soft and cozy. Now I want to get the largest size for even more heavy, snuggly bliss. I slept with it last night along with my normal blanket and I fell asleep much quicker than usual. It does shed a bit on my black clothes but I don’t even care lol. The packaging it arrives in makes it wonderfully gift-able and also lets you know it’s a women-owned company. Didn’t arrive with any bad smells either. All the stitching is immaculate, really everything about this blanket is. I got it on a Black Friday deal for $20% off at $51, it’s worth every penny and feels like a steal to be honest. The quality is unmatched. I’ll have to refrain from buying every single color!

Like it. Good value.
Color: Ivory White, Size: 60"x80"
I like it. It’s furry, obviously acrylic but soft and I like the feel of it.

Worth every penny
Color: Ivory White, Size: 90"x90"
This blanket is so soft and comforting, I just love it! It arrived sealed in a plastic bag and fluffed up instantly, I briefly put it in the dryer on low and it came out absolutely perfect. There was no odd smell, no loose threads, it was very well made and looks so inviting on my bed! Definitely a great buy that will keep you warm.

Definitely genuine pelts.
Size: 2' x 3' (Natural shape, Sheepksin, Oblong), Color: Ivory White
I like the color. Not too white, more of a natural shade. I ordered two, for each side of the bed. One is larger than the other which proves they are genuine pelts and I’m ok with it!!

Great small size rug
Size: 2' x 3' (Natural shape, Sheepksin, Oblong), Color: Ivory White
Size is great, I wanted to use as a throw on a leather ottoman and it fit great. It isn’t exactly the color I expected but it is a neutral cream. Soft and comfortable. Well made.
