In 'Bird Song', a new series of original lithographs made in collaboration with APW printers, Richard Lewer highlights some of Australia's threatened species - the featured birds range from vulnerable to the critically endangered. Lewer aims to create a space for these birds to be appreciated, an archive for their existence and beauty. Given that birds are so integral to the artist's practice, the vulnerability of the subject matter is not only ecologically devastating but also personally challenging.
The Providence Petrel (Pterodroma solandri) is a gadfly petrel that nests in two locations in the Tasman Sea. Unfortunately, the introduction of predators has greatly diminished its population. This bird was once numerous on Norfolk Island; however, an estimated 1 million birds were harvested for food and were completely exterminated on the island by 1800. The bird is currently classified as least concern, but its breeding is confined to just two mountain tops and one small islet, putting it at great risk from any catastrophe. International cooperation is essential for conservation efforts, and countries like Australia, New Zealand, and New Caledonia must work together to address common threats and implement coordinated conservation actions.
'Bird Song' premieres a new suite of fifteen original prints by Richard Lewer produced in collaboration with APW printers at Australian Print Workshop, Melbourne, 2024.
