Description:
Malus ioensis 'Plena', commonly known as the Bechtel Crabapple, is a deciduous ornamental tree prized for its double pink blooms and elegant form. This cultivar of the prairie crabapple is known for its fragrant, rose-like flowers in spring and compact size, making it ideal for gardens, parks, and as a feature tree in landscapes. Its multi-season appeal and manageable size make it a favorite among crabapple varieties.

Flowers:
In late spring, Malus ioensis 'Plena' produces clusters of large, double, rose-like blooms that open a soft pink and fade to a delicate blush. The fragrant flowers are densely packed with petals, creating a lush and romantic display that attracts pollinators.

Foliage:
The tree has dark green, oval-shaped leaves with a serrated edge, providing a dense canopy through spring and summer. In autumn, the leaves turn shades of yellow, adding a warm seasonal touch to the landscape.

Fruit:
Unlike many other crabapple varieties, Bechtel Crabapple rarely produces fruit due to its double flowers, which are generally sterile. This makes it a low-maintenance choice, with little to no fruit drop.

Form and Size:
The Bechtel Crabapple has an upright, rounded growth habit, typically reaching a height of 4 to 6 meters with a similar spread. Its moderate size and rounded shape make it well-suited for smaller gardens and as an ornamental tree in larger landscapes.

Growing Conditions:
This crabapple thrives in full sun and prefers well-draining soil, though it is adaptable to various soil types, including clay and loam. It grows best in slightly acidic to neutral soil and requires regular watering during its establishment phase. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant and performs well in temperate climates.

Uses:
Malus ioensis 'Plena' is ideal as a specimen tree or in small groups in gardens, parks, and courtyards. Its showy flowers and compact size make it perfect for creating focal points, and its minimal fruiting makes it a cleaner option for ornamental landscapes.

Maintenance:
This variety is relatively low-maintenance, requiring only light pruning to shape and remove any dead or crossing branches in late winter. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring to promote healthy growth and flowering. It is generally resistant to common crabapple diseases, though occasional monitoring for apple scab or powdery mildew is beneficial.

Notes:
The Bechtel Crabapple is valued for its unique, double blooms and lack of fruit, making it an attractive choice for low-maintenance gardens. Its compact form, fragrant flowers, and seasonal interest make it a classic addition to ornamental landscapes.

Companion Plants:
Pairs well with spring-flowering bulbs like Daffodils and Tulips, as well as flowering shrubs such as Rhododendrons and Azaleas. It also complements perennials like Hostas, Heuchera, and Ferns, enhancing its romantic and layered aesthetic.

A hit, but could be stronger
Size: Medium, Color: Ring Bone, Size: Medium, Color: Ring Bone
Gave this to my 11 week old pittie, and she did significant damage within 15 mins. She left a pile of chewed bits on the couch but thankfully didn't eat them. Definitely don't leave unsupervised. That said, she LOVED it and it seemed to help her teething gums so, I'm still giving it a 4/5 Puppy pics for tax

My dog loves this toy!!!
Size: Medium (Pack of 1), Style: Stick Medium
I bought this toy for my 80 lb dog who is very rough on her toys. She Loves squeaker toys. This toy held up for about 1 years which is awesome for how aggressive my dog is with her toys. I play tug of war with her with this. The squeaker didn't last too long. Somehow she broke that pretty quickly but the toy itself was very strong and durable. It's a softer rubber like material and it's bendable and twistable. After the toy broke (it actually broke in half), I purchased her another one because of how much she enjoyed it. This newer one, the squeaker still works and have had it for about 6 months or so now. I highly recommend this toy to anyone who has a dog that is an aggressive chewer and who's hard on their toys.

She goes through things pretty quick, and I know she could have destroyed ...
Size: Large (Pack of 1), Style: Stick Large
My dog is a heavy chewer, and player (Doberman). I got one of these when she was a puppy and about 2 years later it broke in half from periodic chewing and tugging. It was one of her favorites and I was impressed it lasted so long so I ordered another one. She goes through things pretty quick, and I know she could have destroyed this fast as well, but it probably helped that she had other things she was supposed to chew on instead. We never encouraged her to chew this, but she loves bringing it over so we can throw it, or tug on it. Never had any issues with the squeaker (until the first one broke in half after 2 years). I would recommend it, but try to encourage it for play and not for chewing. It is flexible and durable and handles a 70lb Doberman dangling from it periodically.

Fun!
Size: Large (Pack of 1), Style: Stick Large
This was nice and fun for my dogs. Squeegee could have last a little longer. It lasted about 2 weeks until they were bored of it but I think that’s more of a my dog issue.

High quality, durable, loved by my chewer *
Size: Medium (Pack of 1), Style: Stick Medium
Excellent chew bone Toy for aggressive chewer. I've purchased this same brand bone/ Toy for several years. One lasts at least 1-2 years ( if it doesn't get run over by a lawn mower). Lol. I usually pay $8-$9 for one in retail stores. This is an excellent price at $6. Squeaker stops after a few months but my Field Spaniel dog is deaf now anyway! He loves chewing on this for his gums and when people are gathered in the same room he just starts chewing and enjoying himself in the midst of fellowship.
