INTRODUCTION:
Welcome to the Lift People & Equipment Using Hoists in Multi-Storey Structures course. This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in planning, preparing, operating, monitoring and shutting down personnel and materials hoists safely and effectively, while meeting legislative, regulatory, manufacturer, workplace and environmental requirements.
Lifting people and equipment using hoists in multi-storey structures involves using powered lifting equipment to transport workers and construction materials vertically through a structure in a controlled and coordinated manner. Because hoists operate under high-risk conditions involving suspended loads, moving mechanical components, electrical systems, weather exposure, work-at-height interfaces and potential interaction with other site activities, safe operation requires strict adherence to operating procedures, safety systems, load limits and communication protocols. Effective hoist operation is critical to preventing falls, crush injuries, dropped loads, uncontrolled movement, equipment damage and interruption to site productivity, while ensuring that personnel movement and material delivery remain reliable and compliant.
The course assessment focuses on your ability to interpret and apply hoist operating requirements, make informed judgements about safety checks, communication and load management, and recognise the practical steps required to operate personnel and materials hoists under typical site constraints. You will be required to demonstrate how you interpret work orders and supporting documentation, confirm operational requirements with relevant persons, and plan hoist work to comply with legislation, regulations, standards, codes, WHS obligations, environmental requirements and workplace procedures.
By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can interpret and apply the core requirements for lifting people and equipment using hoists in multi-storey structures, including planning and compliance, work area and communication control, equipment inspection and functional testing, load verification, safe hoist operation, accurate recording and reporting, and end-of-shift shutdown and maintenance—confirming your readiness to operate hoists reliably within construction site operations.
TOPICS COVERED IN THIS ASSESSMENT:
This course assessment is based on the following topics:
1. Interpreting work orders and associated documentation and confirming hoist operation requirements with relevant persons
2. Planning hoist work to comply with legislation, regulations, standards, codes, WHS, environmental and workplace requirements
3. Selecting the correct personnel and materials hoist, tools and equipment for the task, checking serviceability, and rectifying or reporting faults
4. Establishing the work area with required safety signage and barricades and selecting and fitting appropriate PPE
5. Confirming the required signalling system and communication methods with relevant persons prior to hoist operations
6. Assessing weather conditions and determining whether conditions allow safe hoist operation
7. Inspecting the hoist equipment and surrounding site for damage, structural weakness, or interference hazards
8. Checking mechanical, electrical and safety functions in accordance with manufacturer requirements
9. Conducting a full-height test run without a load, including checking mast stability and wall bolting security
10. Checking and testing the hoist braking system to confirm safe stopping performance
11. Checking and challenging hoist safety systems to confirm operational integrity and safe shutdown responses
12. Recording safety and equipment check results in the hoist logbook and reporting problems to meet regulatory and workplace requirements
13. Performing calculations and checks to confirm load mass and ensure loads conform to safe load capacity of the hoist
14. Operating the hoist safely in accordance with manufacturer instructions and regulatory requirements, including lifting personnel and materials between floors
15. Shutting down, rendering safe and securing the hoist at end of the work period, completing post-operational checks, and cleaning up the work area including environmentally responsible waste management, plus cleaning, maintaining and storing tools and equipment
