Oftentimes, all we would get is a pair of used axles back that had been simply taken apart, cleaned, re-greased, and put back together with new CV boots. You can still get a complete axle assembly from GoWesty, but now we only offer all-new axle assemblies from EMPI, made in China.

Like many things that come from China: For the money, they are hard to beat. But they are by no means the best axle assembly money can buy. The CV joints themselves have been pretty darn bullet proof, but we have seen the axles fail and have noticed the boots and grease are not the best, either. The best way to go is to build your own assemblies by re-using your existing, original German VW axle, and a set of the best quality parts and materials available. That is what the GoWesty axle rebuilt kit offers: Everything you need—except the axle itself, because you're using your own for the rebuilding process.

We offer two kits that are exactly the same, except one has European-made GKN CV joints and the other has Chinese CV joints. With both kits you get superior Rockford boots and all new hardware. So, even building up a set of axle assemblies using Chinese CVs and all the other stuff in our kit is likely to yield a better axle than what you get with a complete Chinese axle from EMPI, plus a smaller carbon footprint since no axles are being discarded.

Building your own drive axles does not require any special tools, and it is actually kind of fun. But if you are not into getting dirty (it is quite a messy job!), or simply don’t want to mess with it—this is a slam-dunk job for any repair shop. Regular Bundle also includes:
• 4 EMPI CV joints with EMPI grease packs
• 4 EMPI standard CV boots

1986-91 4WD Vanagon (Syncro)

Both bundles include:
• 36 CV bolts
• 36 Serrated lock washers

Deluxe Bundle also includes:
• 6 European GKN CV joints for the rear and front inner joints with Febi-Bilstein or GKN grease packs
• 6 Rockford heavy-duty CV boots
• 2 European GKN front outer CV joint shafts with hard boots

Regular Bundle also includes:
• 6 EMPI CV joints for the rear and front inner joints with Empi grease packs
• 6 EMPI standard CV boots
• 2 European front outer CV joint shafts with hard boots
