Helen DeWitt's 2000 debut, The Last Samurai, was "destined to become a cult classic" (Miramax). The enterprising publisher sold the rights in twenty countries, so "Why not just, 'destined to become a classic?'" (Garth Risk Hallberg) And why must cultists tell the uninitiated it has nothing to do with Tom Cruise?

Sibylla, an American-at-Oxford turned loose on London, finds herself trapped as a single mother after a misguided one-night stand. High-minded principles of child-rearing work disastrously well. J. S. Mill (taught Greek at three) and Yo Yo Ma (Bach at two) claimed the methods would work with any child; when these succeed with the boy Ludo, he causes havoc at school and is home again in a month. (Is he a prodigy, a genius? Readers looking over Ludo's shoulder find themselves easily reading Greek and more.) Lacking male role models for a fatherless boy, Sibylla turns to endless replays of Kurosawa's masterpiece Seven Samurai. But Ludo is obsessed with the one thing he wants and doesn't know: his father's name. At eleven, inspired by his own take on the classic film, he sets out on a secret quest for the father he never knew. He'll be punched, sliced, and threatened with retribution. He may not live to see twelve. Or he may find a real samurai and save a mother who thinks boredom a fate worse than death.

Practical, Engaging, and Worth Every Penny
Format: Paperback
I’ve read a few Figma books, but this one stands out because of how engaging and hands-on it is. It’s written in a way that makes you feel like you’re learning from a mentor, not just reading a manual. The exercises are practical, and the step-by-step approach makes even complex concepts easy to grasp. I also loved the section on integrating plugins and designing responsively for multiple devices—it’s these little details that make a big difference in real-world design work.

Really learn Figma!
Format: Paperback
I was transitioning from graphic design to UI/UX, and I needed something that would teach me Figma while helping me build a solid portfolio. This book did exactly that! The real-world projects and case studies were super helpful—I even used one of them as a portfolio piece during a job interview. It’s not just about learning the tool; it’s about understanding how to design better user experiences. The productivity tips and shortcuts alone saved me so much time.

Fun way to learn Spanish
Format: Kindle
I thought that the book was well laid out. They start off by presenting basic topics in a logical fashion. It progressively get more complicated and provides good examples and practices that allow you to apply the topic you are learning. Overall good book for someone looking to learn Spanish. I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
