Recently excavators have uncovered part of the buried city and have located chambers where many died. Do you know where they found one Roman sentinel? Right there in the gate where he had been on duty. His hands were still grasping a spear. He was still erect. He had stayed on as the ashes began piling up around him. His captain had placed him there, and he was duty bound to remain until relieved by another. That relief did not come, so this soldier, who had disciplined himself to stern obedience, died as he had taught himself to live.

And so we all go down through the years―strong or weak, as we prefer, rising or falling, according to our real inner desires, succeeding as we trust and obey or failing as we allow sin and evil and compromise to weaken us. We build on the rock or on the sand, and when the storm strikes, we accordingly stand or fall.
