An authoritative history of the energy crises of the 1970s and the world they wrought

In 1973, the Arab OPEC cartel banned the export of oil to the United States, sending prices and tempers rising across the country. Dark Christmas trees, lowered thermostats, empty gas tanks, and the new fifty-five-mile-per-hour speed limit all suggested that America was a nation in decline. "Don't be fuelish" became the national motto. Though the embargo would end the following year, it introduced a new kind of insecurity into American life--an insecurity that would only intensify when the Iranian Revolution led to new shortages at the end of the decade.

As Meg Jacobs shows, the oil crisis had a decisive impact on American politics. If Vietnam and Watergate taught us that our government lied, the energy crisis taught us that our government didn't work. Presidents Nixon, Ford, and Carter promoted ambitious energy policies that were meant to rally the nation and end its dependence on foreign oil, but their efforts came to naught. The Democratic Party was divided, with older New Deal liberals who prized access to affordable energy squaring off against young environmentalists who pushed for conservation. Meanwhile, conservative Republicans argued that there would be no shortages at all if the government got out of the way and let the market work. The result was a political stalemate and panic across the country: miles-long gas lines, Big Oil conspiracy theories, even violent strikes by truckers.

Jacobs concludes that the energy crisis of the 1970s became, for many Americans, an object lesson in the limitations of governmental power. Washington proved unable to design an effective national energy policy, and the result was a mounting skepticism about government intervention that set the stage for the rise of Reaganism. She offers lively portraits of key figures, from Nixon and Carter to the zealous energy czar William Simon and the young Donald Rumsfeld and Dick Cheney. Jacobs's absorbing chronicle ends with the 1991 Gulf War, when President George H. W. Bush sent troops to protect the free flow of oil in the Persian Gulf. It was a failure of domestic policy at home that helped precipitate military action abroad. As we face the repercussions of a changing climate, a volatile oil market, and continued turmoil in the Middle East, Panic at the Pump is a necessary and lively account of a formative period in American political history.

Invaluable sleep/ dry mouth aid
Cannot live even one night without these Xylimelts. Taste great. Stick well to mouth. Remember: poisonous to dogs. Now we have a dog so I no longer buy the bottles of loose melts as I can spill in middle of night and lose track. Extremely nerve wracking. Using the sheets of melts which you punch out one at a time. Easier to insure dog’s safety.

Wow!!!
Size: 80 ea
XyliMelts were recommended by my new dental hygienist who said she was told about them at a dental conference by a well known hygienist "guru". I ordered them at around four in the morning because I was up as usual because if my chronic pain syndrome and the dry mouth caused by my pain pills. I got them quickly via Amazon and have not been up again this time of night due to the dry mouth. Now I'm up due to the pain but can fall asleep quickly because of the XyliMelts, they work great! I only use one at a time and it lasts around four hours and I put in another one and go right back to sleep. It's so easy to push the little tab out of the cellophane and just hold it on my gum for ten seconds and voila! No more dry mouth. I used to wake up with my mouth so dry there was no saliva at all in my mouth and parched was an understatement, my mouth felt like sandpaper! Now it's always nice and moist and the taste is extremely pleasant (I didn't get the mint). I had to have two teeth extracted four days before Christmas and my dentist said it was due to the dry mouth and that he sees patterns like this in patients with dry mouth and I'd probably lose more teeth unless I came in for cleanings and check ups three times a year instead of two and we kept a really close eye on my teeth. I'd been using Biotene gel but it wasn't keeping my mouth moist long enough. I'm extremely happy with XyliMelt! I'm also 100% sure I won't be losing any more teeth due to my night time dry mouth because it's a thing of the past! Thanks to amazon prime shipping I got my XyliMelts very quickly, and my nighttime dry mouth is a thing of the past! I know they don't claim to stop cavities but without the dry mouth and my new commitment to see my dentist three times a year and to always always brush my teeth before I fall asleep (no more Rolos in bed after I've done my final teeth brushing), I'm confident my dentist won't see a tooth loss pattern in my mouth.

Dry Mouth Tabs, Sugar Free
Size: 80 ea
Always have these in my purse and beside my bed. Mouth is dry and these help to keep it moisturized. Lasts several hours, nice taste, sugar free. I feel saw to use at night, sticks to my mouth wherever I place it. I have never had it slip out of my mouth at night and choke me. My dentist recommended them.

Xylimelts work...very very well..finally moisture to my mouth for longer than anything i have tried
Size: 80 ea
i have xerostomia...this is a dry mouth due to radiation treatments...I have minimum saliva. I must sip water or a liquid with every bite of food. When i talk my mouth quickly dries and makes it difficult to speak......I have tried many....many different sprays, gels, etc. etc. Along came Xylimelts and it has been the best thing for me to date. It does add some moisture to my mouth and the great part is that it lasts for a very long time. I use the mint free only because my dry mouth is more sensitive to certain tastes. I once used Biotene and now i stay away from all of their products.....Biotene was around a while and marketed their product and had become very popular....Glaxo Smith Kline ( the big drug company that only cares about their profits over our health) purchased Biotene and had altered the product for the worse and they have done this with other products. They actually removed beneficial ingredients and replaced them with poor ingredients....Here is just one example: Xylitol was in one of their products ( Biotene toothpaste) when they purchased the company from Biotene. Xylitol has beneficial qualities and they replaced it with the Cancer in Laboratory rats ingredient called Sacharin... They have removed other ingredients as well...I stay away from any product from Glaxo Smith Kline. I have my own personal boycott and that means I no longer buy their Tums as well... Yes...They played their games with Tums also.....so i just do not buy their products. Xylimelts does work for me...very very well. It adheres to the gums above my teeth and it just stays there adds moisture to my mouth. Obviously i recommend this product
