The discography of this Verdi opera is rather limited. Aside from the RCA edition with Anno Moffo and Carlo Bergonzi and the Decca edition with Montserrat Caballé and Luciano Pavarotti, there are no truly reference editions, not even the one conducted by Maazel and Levine, which certainly did not meet with critical acclaim. This rather rare version, which we now present, features two of the most celebrated voices of the 1960s: Antonietta Stella and Giuseppe Di Stefano. Neither singer ever recorded the opera in a studio, and thus this release is a valid reason to consider it an important contribution to the discography of a transitional opera of great importance in Verdi's catalogue.
