They prefer well-oxygenated water with a pH of 6.5-7.5 and temperatures of 72-79°F (22-26°C). It is important to provide plenty of hiding spaces and a sandy substrate for them to dig in. They are carnivorous and will readily accept a variety of live and frozen foods. Apistogramma agassizi-santarem is an egg-scattering species, and can be bred in the home aquarium.
