Coulter was a friend of Ian Fleming, and shared his background in British Naval Intelligence. He helped Fleming with a few background details in Flemings first book, "Casino Royale". Coulter also wrote spy and adventure thrillers, under the pseudonym of James Mayo. His action figure, Charles Hood, was similar to James Bond.
