Blackmagic Design ATEM SDI

The ATEM SDI is the entry-level model in the SDI-based "mini" switcher lineup. While it lacks the internal hardware streaming and recording found in the "Pro ISO" models, it provides the exact same professional 3G-SDI connectivity, allowing you to use high-end broadcast cameras with locking BNC cables over long distances.

In 2026, it remains a favorite for users who already have a dedicated streaming computer or those who need a low-cost, professional sub-switcher for localized monitor routing.

Core Functionality

  • 4 Standards-Converted SDI Inputs: Each of the 4 inputs features a dedicated format converter. You can plug in any combination of HD sources (720p, 1080i, or 1080p) and the switcher will automatically bring them into your master project frame rate.

  • USB Webcam Output: This is the primary way to stream with this model. When connected to a computer via USB-C (cable not included), the ATEM appears as a standard "Webcam." You can then use software like OBS, Zoom, or Microsoft Teams to broadcast your switched program.

  • Professional Transitions: Features a full suite of broadcast-quality effects, including Cut, Mix, Dip, Wipe, and DVE (Digital Video Effects) for picture-in-picture layouts.

The "Pro ISO" vs. "Standard" Difference

Since you are looking at the standard ATEM SDI, it is important to note what this model does not include compared to the "Pro ISO" version:

  • No Internal Recording: This model cannot record to an external USB-C drive.

  • No Direct Hardware Streaming: It does not have a built-in RTMP encoder. You must use a computer via USB-C or an external encoder to go live.

  • No Multiview Button: While you can output a Multiview to your SDI monitor, the standard model lacks the dedicated physical "M/V" button on the faceplate (this is managed via the Software Control).

Technical Specifications

Feature Details
Video Inputs 4 x 3G-SDI (BNC)
Video Outputs 2 x 3G-SDI (Fully assignable Aux/Program/Preview)
Audio Inputs 2 x 3.5mm Stereo (Mic/Line level)
Audio Mixer Fairlight Mixer (Compressor, Limiter, 6-band EQ)
Keyers 1 Upstream (Chroma), 1 Downstream (Graphics)
USB Interface USB-C 2.0 (Webcam & Software Control)

USB-C Cable Requirement (Not Included)

As noted in the title, the USB-C cable is not included. To use this switcher as a webcam or to configure it via the ATEM Software Control app, you will need a high-quality USB-C to USB-C (or USB-A) cable.

  • Pro Tip: For the standard model, a USB 2.0 cable is sufficient for the webcam feed, but a USB 3.1 Gen 1 cable is recommended for the most stable connection during firmware updates and software control.

Operational Insight (2026)

In 2026, the standard ATEM SDI is often used as a "frontend" for Blackmagic Studio Cameras. Even without the internal streaming, it can still send Tally, Talkback, and Camera Control data back to the cameras over the SDI return lines. This makes it an incredibly cheap way to build a professional "control room" environment if you already have a PC to handle the streaming.

Note on Monitoring: Since this unit has two SDI outputs, you can set Output 1 to show your Multiview (all cameras) and Output 2 to show your clean Program feed for a local recorder or projector.

Very durable and my Heeler's fave inside toy
Size: Large
My red Heeler loves these balls, second only to Tennis balls but she destroys those within minutes and they are outside only. This is her inside ball. She is hard on toys and has the strongest bite of any dog I've had (shepherds, collies, weimaraners, retrievers, Labs) yet these continue to last. She catches the ball, we play tug of war with it (she places it in hand hand and pulls only when I have a firm grip, she shakes it and flings it. The rubber outside even outlasts the water-bottle like plastic piece inside. Steps holds the ball with her foot and pulls on the rubber with her mouth, stretching it to sometimes twice its size. I pull while shes pulling. This thing gets abused daily and keeps on going. Its the most used toy and she brings it to me to play with every day. Each ball lasts about 6 months before the inside ball is toast and the outer rubber is finally starting to tear/break. which for me in an incredibly long time. If this ball is available to play, she wants it over all others. Shes NEVER gotten a piece off to actually swallow and that alone is worth the price.

Great ball but easily broken
Size: Large
I got this ball for my two dogs, one is a 90 pound yellow lab mix and the other 45 pound black lab mix. So far only my bigger dog has played with it and has also busted it. He was playing with it for probably half an hour just chomping down to make it crinkle and crunch. It's quite the loud ball!! I noticed the sound wasn't as loud so I took a peek and noticed my dog basically crushed the inner ball into a much smaller ball. He's still having a good time with it though. It's only a matter of time though that he's going to chew the outer shell because it doesn't make noise like it did.

Dogs go for this ball every time
Size: Large, Size: Large
My Boston's and Rotti love this ball. I had to get two more. It's great for the Boston's because they can grasp it with the way it's made with the softer rubber. They love the crackle sound. It's just the right size and weight for smaller like the Boston Terrier and Rotti. Easy cleaning, rinses right off.
