Euphorbia inermis is a fascinating succulent species native to South Africa, known for its unusual, sculptural appearance. It typically forms dense, dome-shaped clusters of cylindrical stems that grow upright from a central base, resembling a sea urchin or coral. Unlike many other Euphorbias, Euphorbia inermis lacks prominent spines—hence the name “inermis,” meaning “unarmed” or “spineless.” The stems are often a gray-green color and can have small, wart-like tubercles. In late spring to summer, it produces curious and attractive cyathia (Euphorbia’s unique floral structures), usually white to pale yellow, which emerge from the top of the stems. This species thrives in well-draining soil, full sun to light shade, and requires minimal water, making it ideal for xeriscaping or container cultivation. Like other Euphorbias, it exudes a milky sap when cut, which can be irritating to skin and toxic if ingested.
