In 1932 John Daniel and Kizzie Zore (Comer) Littrell moved to the boot-heel area of Missouri from Lawrence County, Tennessee. They would live the rest of their lives (35 years) in Mississippi County.
Five sons and two son-in-laws of John & Kizzie Littrell served in the armed forces of the United States of America.
To date at least 35 descendants and descendant spouses) of John Daniel Littrell and Kizzie Zore Comer (John & Kizzie) have served their country. They have served on 5 continents: North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa.
This book tells their stories and the stories of the ancestors of John & Kizzie going back to the Revolutionary War. Luttrell and Belew in the Revolution; Literal, Ezell and Comer in the Civil War; and their descendants are presented with pictures, maps, photos and narratives. From the 2nd Spartan Regiment of South Carolina to the USS Benfold in the Persian Gulf.

A Classic That Requires Time
Format: Paperback
This book is for a particular type of reader. Robinson’s writing is beautiful, but not easy. The ideas are complex. It takes effort to get through. But, if you are interested in Black politics, and looking for fresh thinking, I recommend it highly. The funny thing is, the title is misleading. It is more about Europe and the formation of capitalism, and what Robinson defines as The Black Radical Tradition. Marx is critiqued but not rejected, and held uneasily at arm’s length. As Angela Davis wrote, this book needs to be read more than once. It’s like an album or a movie that is so unique and rich that you know you probably missed something on the first go-round. I expect to return to it many years to come.

It’s daunting (many of Robinson’s footnotes are like fascinating blogposts about history, so it’s a lot to get through, let alone think about. But Robinson's deeply-researched account of a Black radicalism independent of European ideas is enlightening. Robin Kelley's introduction to the new edition is worth reading on its own.
