W James Wintle - Ghost Gleams, Heath Cranton, 1921, Original Copy

An original scarce copy.  Rubbed boards and bumped corners, with a split to back spine.  Foxing inside boards and endpapers, also contents page.  Hingecrack to front and back.    Free endpaper is loose.  Text firm and clean.  A handwritten note written by Richard Dalby commenting on each story.   A fine copy.

First published in 1921, Ghost Gleams is one of the most elusive titles in the genre of the classic supernatural tale; and the author of the collection's fifteen tales has long been a mysterious—even ghostly—figure, despite having been a prolific Victorian and Edwardian writer who was able to turn his hand to almost any subject required of him.

Born in 1861, William James Wintle established a name for himself as a prolific and versatile author, equally adept at writing a best-selling account of the Armenian massacre and a cookbook of Continental recipes. He was considered an expert on the British royal family, was a noted writer on the subject of natural history, and in 1899 became the major regular in-house contributor to the highly popular Harmsworth Magazine.

Towards the end of the Great War, Wintle became an Oblate in the Abbey of Caldey Island; and it was there, on Sunday evenings, that he told a series of ghost stories to the eight boys who attended the Abbey's school. The stories—which feature a range of other-worldly visitants, from haunted beds and vengeful ancestors to spectral cats and prehistoric animals—were later collected together and published as Ghost Gleams, with the author noting that 'the gruesome ones met with the best reception'.

Contents: 'The Red Rosary'; 'When Twilight Fell'; 'The House on the Cliff'; 'The Ghost at The Blue Dragon'; 'The Spectre Spiders'; 'The Footsteps on the Stairs'; 'The Chamber of Doom'; 'When Time Stood Still'; 'The Black Cat'; 'Father Thornton's Visitor'; 'The Horror of Horton House'; 'The Haunted House on the Hill'; 'The Voice in the Night'; 'The Light in the Dormitory'; 'The Watcher in the Mill'; 'Can You Explain It? True Stories of the Ghost World'; Afterword by Peter J. Wire.

Published by Ash-Tree Press on 19th February 1999 and limited to 500 copies. The book comes in hardback grey cloth with silver writing on the spine, with 168 numbered pages. Cover illustrations by Jason C. Eckhardt. Introduction by Richard Dalby.   For sale on this website.

Weight  378g.    Pages   287.

Former celeb makeup artist thinks this is THE best!
Color: Soft Brown, Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1)
I was a pretty successful makeup artist based in NY for many years. I am OBSESSED with eyebrows because even a few millimeters and a different angle can affect the way the entire face looks. Most importantly-I started drawing my eyebrows on in the 1970’s at AGE 12 because I was tired of people asking me “why I plucked my eyebrows” at age 12. I hardly ever had any-so from a very young age I drew them on. Now I am 58-and nothing is more aging than a face with no eyebrows. I won’t even walk my dogs without drawing them on-lol! I am as obsessed with product quality as I was when working my career and at the top of my game, so I try EVERYTHING. I also put my brows on first thing in the morning and do not want them to move or wear off under any conditions-so these relatively new extreme wear products are genius. I have tried ALL the eyebrow “pens” and this is the best. I have almost zero natural brows now, so I draw on each hair with the fine tip (microblade style) in the shape I want. I use two shades, a lighter and a darker because it creates the most real looking optical illusion on my face. I do not have to blend-but a spoolie type thing is attached to the lid if needed. This is the only brand that stays on, never smudges when I work out and even stays on through the night if I wear no makeup and wash my face with a non oil cleanser lightly. (I usually use a cleansing oil and that is the best way to remove this product as well) You can also remove this brow pen with an oil based eye makeup remover (Garnier-but even then it resists removal-genius!) There are about 4 or 5 brow products I think are good enough (out of the 50 plus I have tried in my career) and due to ease of application, shades, fine tip and longest wear-this is holy grail for me.

Good product
Color: Soft Brown, Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1)
I do not buy Cover Girl products, but took a chance on this. I am happy I did. This is a nice eyebrow pencil, for a drugstore brand. It does not have the Cover Girl smell. The color was fine for me. It most certainly does not last 24 hours though. I've no idea why the company is allowed to use that in the name.
