"I Don't Play No Rock & Roll" Fred McDowell famously said, but many many Rock & Rollers play Fred's music. His bottleneck guitar playing is essential to the blues genre and has influenced countless players.Fred was an originator of a style called North Mississippi Blues or Hill Country Blues. The style has been carried on by Luther Dickinson, R.L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough. Fred was born in 1904 and began playing guitar in his teens, but never made a recoding until he was "discovered" by Alan Lomax in 1959. He quickly became popular in both folk and blues circles. He played the Newport Folk Festival and toured Europe. Among his many fans are the Rolling Stones who covered his tune You Got to Move, and Bonnie Raitt who he gave guitar lessons to. The recordings were made in the year leading up to his death and will be eagerly welcomed by his many fans.

A Challenge For All Liberals
Format: Paperback
I thought the book was well-written, impeccably sourced, wide-ranging, and with a thesis that can't help but make you think. Well worth your time.

The history is unpleasant and therefore worth knowing.
It's a wonderfully enlightening history of how European explorers visited, settled in, conquered, and exploited other continents with unparalleled cruelty in the name of power, greed, and their "loving" religion that brought them misery, exploitation and, all too often, abject slavery.

Wonderful History Lessons
I ordered this book to use for a college paper I was writing and found it fascinating. I enjoyed the content and learned much from it.
The history is written in a manner that for those people that either don't read much or don't like to read (yes, there are a few people out there), it will draw you in and make you question the history lessons we suffered through in high school.
