The Exo Terra Bamboo Forest Floor is a multi-layer substrate designed to mimic the forest floor found in authentic bamboo ecosystems.
The forest floor is a defining characteristic of the bamboo forest habitat, typically comprising two primary layers;

1. The upper layer made up of fresh leaf litter
2. The lower layer containing nutrient-rich organic matter – generally decomposed leaves and wood

The upper layer is composed of sun-dried decorative bamboo leaves sourced sustainably. This decorative layer allows you to create the soft ground cover typical of natural bamboo forests. The bamboo leaves offer a gentle surface for animals to burrow into and conceal their hideaway. Many reptiles and amphibians explore the forest floor to find food and water. The upper layer also protects the underlying substrate, helping it retain moisture and preventing it from drying out. These biodegradable bamboo leaves are completely chemical-free and can be safely added to your compost pile.

The lower layer is made of rich organic matter derived from sustainably sourced coconut husk fiber. This substrate is 100% natural, eco-friendly, and biodegradable with excellent moisture-retaining properties. This base layer is perfect for establishing naturally planted terrariums for humidity-loving reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates. Its ability to retain water, combined with natural rooting hormones and antifungal benefits, encourages healthy plant growth in your terrarium. The unique coir pith used in the Exo Terra Bamboo Forest Floor consists of a blend of short fibers and coco-peat granules of varying sizes, enhancing soil drainage and aeration for robust plant roots.

The upper layer of bamboo leaves helps keep the base layer slightly moist, making maintenance easier by creating a natural ecosystem where beneficial organisms break down waste, thus minimizing odors.

The Exo Terra Bamboo Forest Floor is heat-treated to lower the risk of bacterial contamination.

Directions for use:
Spread a layer of 2-4” (5-10 cm) of the base layer across the terrarium floor. Adjust the moisture level by watering or misting the substrate as needed. Arrange your decorative items within the terrarium, then cover the surface with the top layer of decorative bamboo leaves. Utilize an Exo Terra Hygrometer to keep track of moisture levels. To boost humidity in well-ventilated terrariums or those with higher humidity needs, consider placing an Exo Terra terrarium substrate heater below the terrarium. Clean the bedding daily and replace it entirely with fresh bedding when necessary.
