Choice Outstanding Academic Title of 2018 International adoption is in a state of virtual collapse, rates having fallen by more than half since 2004 and continuing to fall. Yet around the world millions of orphaned and vulnerable children need permanent homes, and thousands of American and European families are eager to take them in. Many government officials, international bureaucrats, and social commentators claim these adoptions are not in the best interests of the child. They claim that adoption deprives children of their birth culture, threatens their racial identities, and even encourages widespread child trafficking. Celebrity adopters are publicly excoriated for stealing children from their birth families. This book argues that opposition to adoption ostensibly based on the well-being of the child is often a smokescreen for protecting national pride. Concerns about the harm done by transracial adoption are largely inconsistent with empirical evidence. As for trafficking, opponents of international adoption want to shut it down because it is too much like a market for children. But this book offers a radical challenge to this view--that is, what if instead of trying to suppress market forces in international adoption, we embraced them so they could be properly regulated? What if the international system functioned more like open adoption in the United States, where birth and adoptive parents can meet and privately negotiate the exchange of parental rights? This arrangement, the authors argue, could eliminate the abuses that currently haunt international adoption. The authors challenge the prevailing wisdom with their economic analyses and provocative analogies from other policy realms. Based on their own family's experience with the adoption process, they also write frankly about how that process feels for parents and children.Binding Type: Hardcover

Very nice shelf for the bathroom.

The small screws that screw into the wood shelves strip very easily. Be careful. Had to use different longer screws. Went together fine.

Functional
Color: Black, Size: 2+1 Tier Size
Very functional and sturdy. The installation wasn’t bad at all, I used a level to assist. It looks great, and all my products look organized on it.

Sturdy & Easy to Assemble!
Color: Black, Size: 2 in 1
Does not come assembled - you must assemble it, and once you do, it leans a little forward due to the hanging screws being on the top but on the bottom. It looks as shown, although dimensions are slightly different than indicated. It is 12" wide x 5" deep, and I bought the one that said it was 18" wide by 4" deep. It's sturdy enough to hold hair products and toiletries, or a small plant. Overall decent for price.

love!
Color: Black, Size: 2+1 Tier Size, Color: Black, Size: 2+1 Tier Size
these floating shelves are sooo cute and i love them so much. it took a HOT minute to put them together (prob like 30-45 mins for me), but i can’t explain how happy i am to have them! i hung these once in my last apartment and re-hung again after moving, and they’re still great.
the only con is that the rail around the bottom shelf (the part “holding” the L block, plant, and white block in) is a little bent and i can’t straighten it out no matter what i do. it’s really hard to tell, but it’s not quite level with the board beneath it (pic 2). i’m just a perfectionist so it was very clear to me when putting it together haha. nobody else notices it until i point it out, and i’ve begun to overlook it too, but just a little something that i wanted to add.
