Mangroves might seem to be fixed in place, but they serve as an indicator of climate change. As global temperatures rise and sea levels rise along with them, salt water intrudes upon what have long been freshwater environments. Mangroves take root where they never have been seen before. In such a way, one Florida habitat is taking over another. Mangroves expand their range through a fascinating way of reproducing. According to Smithsonian Ocean, “mangrove ‘offspring’ begin to grow while still attached to their parent. Little seedlings fall off the tree and are swept away by currents until becoming waterlogged, falling to the bottom and lodge into the mud.” If conditions are right, they begin to grow after about a year. Mangroves are like high-density condos, attracting a great diversity of life above and below the waterline. Their roots provide substrate for clinging organisms and launch a chain of life that extends to include snook, tarpon and redfish. Birds including spoonbills, mangrove cuckoos, warblers, kingfishers and egrets flock to the cover that mangrove trees provide and iguanas hang out in their branches, unaware that they are clinging to a plant that helps stem shoreline erosion. - Steve Bornhoft

Throughout the coastlines of southern Florida, mangrove forests are teeming with biodiversity, both above and below the water line. Predominantly populated with red mangroves (Rhizophora mangle), mangrove forest help stabilize the coast, prevent shoreline erosion, and reduce storm surge during large storms like hurricanes. Above the water, red mangroves provide habitat for numerous animals specieis like spoonbills, green iguanas, mangrove cuckoos, mangrove warblers, belted kingfishers, egrets, mangrove periwinkle snails, mangrove crabs, and many more. Below the water's surface, mangrove roots provide habitat for mangrove snapper, snook, needlefish, tarpon, mullet, pipefish, and much more. Their roots can also provide structure for oysters to attach to. As climate change continues, this habitat will become more valuable by protecting Florida's shoreline from stronger hurricanes. Fortunately, there has been a large movement in recent years to plant more mangroves along the coast throughout South Florida.
