Collars and plackets are often the point where confidence wobbles — not because they’re impossible, but because they demand accuracy, order, and understanding why each step matters.

This Collars & Plackets Workshop is a focused skills-builder designed to demystify these key garment details. Rather than rushing through a full garment, we slow things down and work methodically, so you can practise, repeat, and really understand the techniques that make collars crisp and openings beautifully finished.

You’ll work through samples and exercises, building a reference set you can return to again and again when sewing shirts, dresses, and lightweight jackets.

What You’ll Learn

Collars

  • How collars are constructed and how they relate to the neckline

  • A convertible collar — ideal for casual shirts and dresses

  • A two-piece shirt collar, including stand, collar, roll line, and shape

  • Techniques for accuracy, symmetry, and clean collar finishes

Plackets & Openings

  • A placket opening for cuffs, including correct construction order

  • A continuous bound opening for sleeves and centre openings

  • How to choose the right opening for the garment you’re making

  • Common mistakes — and how to fix them

Along the way, we’ll cover fabric choice, interfacing, grain, and finishing details that make all the difference.

Ideal For

This workshop is ideal if you:

  • Have sewn garments before but avoid collars and plackets

  • Want to improve the finish and professionalism of your makes

  • Are building skills for shirtmaking, dressmaking, or pattern cutting

  • Prefer understanding how things work, not just following instructions

Basic machine confidence is all you need.

You’ll Leave With

By the end of the workshop, you’ll leave with:

  • A set of professionally finished samples for collars and plackets

  • A clear understanding of construction order and why it matters

  • The confidence to tackle collars and openings without second-guessing

  • Techniques you can apply across shirts, dresses, and other garments

  • A practical reference you can return to whenever you’re sewing at home

Most importantly, you’ll leave knowing that collars and plackets are no longer something to avoid.

What’s Included

  • All demo fabrics, interfacing, and sample materials

  • Printed reference notes to support your learning

  • Use of studio equipment and tools

  • Individual guidance throughout the day

  • Tea, coffee, and a supportive, focused studio environment

(You’re welcome to bring your own fabrics if you’d like to practise on something specific.)

This workshop is perfect for anyone who wants precise, professional tailoring finishes and the satisfaction of mastering beautiful detail work.

Lunch is not included so please feel free to bring your own, or make use of the lovely Cafe we have onsite.

Good Reading
Format: Paperback
The third book we chose to read for our summer reading program was Not That Pet! I am a nanny of a six-year-old girl going into first grade. It’s fun seeing a child’s eyes light up when a book or story engages their imagination. This story was another hit. This was an entertaining read! This is a rhyming read-aloud story that had us both giggling from the beginning of the story to the end. The main character, Mabel, is allowed to pick the family pet. She is determined to find the perfect pet. Her choices had us groaning, ‘oh nooo’ while shaking our heads and laughing out loud. We couldn’t read fast enough to see Mabel’s next choice. Her final decision was unpredictable. We couldn’t believe the final choice was a…. well, you’ll just have to read the story yourself to find out. The illustrations themselves had us smirking. We took the time to really look at the pages and discovered small details that really added to the enjoyment of the story. We read this story several times which is an indicator that this book is a keeper. Enjoy reading Summer 2023! originally posted at long and short reviews

As good As It Get
Format: Kindle
I read the second book in this cottage series about smart town/village life in the Cotswolds before this first one. Both are so very very good and touching. Can't wait to read the third one in this series. These sapphic HEA romances are as good as it gets.

Sweet, Escapist, and Good Characters
Format: Kindle
I enjoyed the setting of this book. I love a book with a good sense of place. The chemistry between the characters was good and built through the story, I thought the book could have benefited from heavier editing. I appreciated the good dialogue, but it seemed unnecessarily copious at times, putting a drag on the forward motion of the story. Worth my time - absolutely.

Bravo!
Format: Kindle
"For two people who love words, we f***ing suck at communication." These words, uttered near the end of the book, really describe the relationship between Josie and Harriett (Harry). They have both built their careers on the crafting of words, but when it comes to them communicating with each other, there are many misunderstandings, foot-in-mouth moments, and missed opportunities to say how they feel. That, along with each one's hesitation to make the first move, causes the sexual tension to build and build, so when they finally do get together... well, you don't want to miss that! The contrast of Josie, the American, and Harry, the Brit, is fun. The story is heart-warming. The banter is enjoyable and doesn't seem like it's just filling space in the book. The supporting characters are colorful and have depth. I really enjoyed it, so I say, "Bravo, TB Markinson! A standing ovation from me!"
