A stunning example of an iridescent ammonite fossil of the species Psiloceras planorbis from North Somerset, UK.
The matrix measures 95 mm (3.7 inches) wide and the ammonite measures 75 mm (2.95 inches), which is large for this species. It is preserved in one of two pieces of shale which was split open perfectly to reveal both the positive (shell) and negative (impression) of the fossil. This is very unusual with these fossils as they don't normally split open like this.
Both pieces of shale have cut-flat bases allowing them to be displayed either free standing or both pieces can be put back go together to hide the ammonite for a suprise!
The ammonite is very well preserved and has been prepared out of the rock to reveal the shell. The shell displays some beautiful iridescence with flashes of gold and copper that change as the viewing angle changes.
These fossils are highly sought after and very hard to find. They are preserved in the same way as the famous Canadian "Ammolite" ammonites that are turned into valuable gemstones. The combined weight of both pieces is 290 grams. These fossils make great unusual gifts and each one is totally unique.
Around 200 million years old (Hettangian, Early Jurassic), this fossil would make a wonderful addition to any collection.
