Of the canyons that break the eastern edge of the Staked Plains, Palo Duro is by far the most spectacular. As one approaches the edge, the earth opens up into a vast gash, a geological and ecological wonder. And whether you come to Palo Duro as a novice or veteran canyoneer, the thrill and the mystery are always intense. How did the canyon get here? What caused the vari-color of the walls and formations? Why do some formations stand completely separated from the canyon walls? Did the little stream running along the canyon floor form this canyon all by itself? Who were the first people to find this canyon and how did they react? On this last question imagination goes to work and contemplates what ancient people must have felt when they, even less aware than we, stumbled upon the chasm rim and quickly realized that they had found a bonanza, an immense concentration of water, wood, game, and protection all they needed to sustain life. Frederick W. RathjenOriginally published as an edition of the Panhandle Plains Historical Review, The Story of Palo Duro Canyon, with its seven essays devoted to geology, archeology, paleontology, vegetation, park development, and the amphitheater, and its road log from Canyon, Texas, through the Palo Duro State Park, has become a classic. This Double Mountain Books edition, with a new introduction by Frederick W. Rathjen, makes available once again a comprehensive discovery and invaluable memento for the many thousands who visit the park each year."

fables from an alternate world
Format: Hardcover
Fun stuff from Mike Mignola, very low key and doesn't try to be anything grandiose, just some simple stories from an alternate world very reminiscent of Robert E. Howard's Conan stories with a hint of Luis Borges. The art is fun, with some nods to Richard Corben, who was apparently a big influence on Mignola. Definitely fun and looking forward to book 2.

DEFINITELY go bowling!
Format: Hardcover
If you're like me (the husband of the woman whose card purchased this book, lol) and thought that Mike Mignola stepping away from drawing comic books was a crime against humanity, well, Bowling With Corpses is sweet, fun, dark redemption. Hands down the best thing he's ever done and the foundation for a new world and characters outside the Hellboy Universe. A craggy, crazy, shadowy, goofy mix of all the weird stuff I dug growing up: horror movies, Jack Kirby monster stories, Poe and pulp, Machen and Blackwood, myths, legends, and folklore, the Japanese ghost stories from Kwaidan. As Mignola himself says in his afterward regarding his semi-retirement, "The hell with this. I love drawing comics so I'll just keep drawing comics." Praise be to the Elder Gods for your decision, Mike—now get crackin' on your NEXT book!

This is Other Work, and Different
Format: Hardcover
It was recommended by a usually reliable source, but even with the amazing art this is some weird stuff, strange stories that are spooky and deathly depressive. Just paging through it, the style remains the same. Mike Mignola has done other work that I liked more immediately. There's humor in this book which might suit me better, so this isn't a bad review, just a little-bit at a time review.

Shades of fantasist history
Format: Kindle
This is a great collection of stories to introduce a new world and some of its characters. For Hellboy fans you will feel some echoes of those stories, but this different and more like a walk through the world of dark fairy tales threading to become connected in some future tale. The art is beautifully crafted, and i hope we will get to see more of this word and its stories. Thank you Mr. Mignola
