On one side are those who believe in plain, unvarnished facts, rock-solid truths that can be found through reason and objectivity--that science leads to truth, for instance. Their opponents mock this idea. They see the dark forces of language, culture, power, gender, class, ideology and desire--all subverting our perceptions of the world, and clouding our judgement with false notions of absolute truth. Beginning with an early skirmish in the war--when Socrates confronted the sophists in ancient Athens--Blackburn offers a penetrating look at the longstanding battle these two groups have waged, examining the philosophical battles fought by Plato, Protagoras, William James, David Hume, Hans-Georg Gadamer, Jacques Derrida, Michel Foucault, Richard Rorty, and many others, with a particularly fascinating look at Nietzsche. Among the questions Blackburn considers are: is science mere opinion, can historians understand another historical period, and indeed can one culture ever truly understand another.
Blackburn concludes that both sides have merit, and that neither has exclusive ownership of truth. What is important is that, whichever side we embrace, we should know where we stand and what is to be said for our opponents.

“Tiny Backpack, Big Personality!”
This little backpack is doing big kid things — and my toddler knows it. The second we strapped it on, he marched around like he was off to close a business deal with juice boxes in both hands.
It’s the perfect size for tiny shoulders, and the chest buckle? GENIUS. No more slippy straps or bag-flinging tantrums. It stays put like a champ, even during epic playground sprints and spontaneous dance moves in the grocery store.
The material is sturdy, the zippers glide like butter, and the reflective strip makes my toddler look like he’s ready for a baby night shift. The color combo is sleek — black and grey with just the right touch of “cool kid on campus” energy.
Plenty of space for snacks, sippy cups, a favorite toy, and 14 mysterious pebbles he insisted on collecting “for science.”
If your 2-4-year-old wants to carry their own stuff and look proud doing it — this is the backpack for them. Highly recommend (and yes, I already ordered another one for backup... because toddlers). 🎒

A good buy especially for young kids
Our community is providing school supplies this year for an elementary school that we adopted. Backpacks are in big demand but, as you know if you’ve been shopping, pretty pricey. This backpack was a Prime-day find so I bought a couple of them but, even back to the regular price, it’s a good deal especially for very young kids. In person the backpack is cute and stylish with the vibrant range of colors you see in the product pictures. I bought the large backpack which, as you can see in the photo, is more than tall enough for a standard manila folder. The stitching seems sound and the straps work as you would expect; it also has two side pockets. If I had to pick a weak spot, I’d say it’s the zipper, especially the one on the front pouch. It’s not a problem at the moment but it’s nylon, not metal, and so I don’t expect it to last forever. But if it gets through one school year, I consider that good. I think it’s a pretty good buy if you’re on a budget.

Two words: Double. Zipper.
Size: Small, Color: Purple
Great backpack for transitioning out of diaper bag but not yet ready to fling caution to the wind and leave the house with nothing. The real win on this is the double zipper. Zipping one way only is the worrrrst, and you don’t have to with this. So if you end up getting another one, that’s fine, but do yourself a favor and confirm the double zipper.
