An in-depth intellectual history of the Western idea and a passionate defense of its importance to America's future, "From Plato to NATO" is the first book to make sense of the legacy of the West at a time when it is facing its greatest challenges. Readers of Francis Fukuyama, John Gray, Samuel Huntington, and other analysts of the dilemmas of Western nations in the twenty-first century will find in David Gress's original account a fuller description of what the West really is and how, with the best of intentions, it has been misrepresented. Most important, they will encounter a new vision of Western identity and how it can be recovered.

Early in the twentieth century, American educators put together a story of Western civilization, its origins, history, and promise that for the subsequent fifty years remained at the heart of American college education. The story they told was of a Western civilization that began with the Greeks and continued through 2,500 years of great books and great ideas, culminating in twentieth-century progressive liberal democracy, science, and capitalist prosperity.

In the 1960s, this Grand Narrative of the West came under attack. Over the next thirty years, the critics turned this old story into its opposite: a series of anti-narratives about the evils, the failures, and the betrayals of justice that, so they said, constituted Western history.

The victory of Western values at the end of the cold war, the spread of democracy and capitalism, and the worldwide impact of American popular culture have not revived the Grand Narrative in the European and American heartlands of the West. David Gress explains this paradox, arguing that the Grand Narrative of the West was flawed from the beginning: that the West did not begin in Greece and that, in morality and religion, the Greeks were an alien civilization whose contribution was mediated through Rome and Christianity. Furthermore, in assuming a continuity from the Greeks to modern liberalism, we have mistakenly downplayed or rejected everything in between, focusing on the great ideas and the great books rather than on real history with all its ambiguities, conflicts, and contradictions.

The heart of Gress's case for the future of the West is that the New must remember its roots in the Old and seek a synthesis. For as the attacks have demonstrated, the New West cannot stand alone. Its very virtues -- liberty, reason, progress -- grew out of the Old West and cannot flourish when removed from that rich soil.

Major Safety Red Flag! 3 Prong Outlets, 2 Prong Plug, This Does Not Provide A Grounded Connection!
Size: 5FT, Color: White 2prong, Size: 5FT, Color: White 2prong
This power strip has a compact design, a convenient outlet layout, and USB ports, so on the surface it looks useful. The patented three-row layout is clever for spacing the outlets, but that only applies to how the outlets are positioned. It does not change how the strip is actually powered or protected. The problem is the safety design. It has 11 three-prong outlets, but the wall plug itself is only two-prong. Without a ground prong, it is not grounded. The two flat prongs are hot and neutral only, so this does not provide the grounded protection that the three-prong outlets appear to suggest. That also makes the surge protection claims highly questionable to me. A real grounded surge protector should have a grounding path for excess surge energy. With only a two-prong plug, I would not trust this to provide the kind of surge protection people generally expect when plugging in electronics or grounded devices. The manual mentions surge protection, ground protection, short-circuit protection, over-current protection, over-voltage protection, over-heat protection, and UL 1363 safety standards, but I could not find any visible UL, ETL, or similar safety certification mark on the unit or paperwork. The only marking I saw was FCC, which is not the same thing as electrical safety certification. Given the two-prong plug and three-prong outlets, those protection claims feel dubious at best and misleading at worst. The USB charging is also underwhelming. The total USB output is listed as 24W, which is not much for today’s devices, especially when that power is shared across multiple ports. We frequently use 35W or higher from a single USB charger, so I would not buy this for fast or modern device charging either. Because of the two-prong plug paired with three-prong outlets, I will absolutely not use this. I do not want a power strip that makes devices appear protected or grounded when they are not. For me, this is not a small design issue. It is a serious safety concern.

Convenient Design but Raises Some Safety Concerns
Size: 5FT, Color: White 2prong, Size: 5FT, Color: White 2prong
As other reviews have mentioned, this power strip does not provide true grounding protection. It allows devices with three-prong plugs to connect through a two-prong wall outlet, but the strip itself still relies on a two-prong connection. Because of that, I think it’s important to understand the potential safety limitations before using it, especially with higher-powered electronics. It does offer a large number of outlets and USB ports, which is convenient for older homes with limited access to modern plugs. However, considering the price, there are safer and more reliable alternatives available that may be a better long-term choice.

Good Buy - 4 USB Ports (USB C) Hurray! - Fits Well In Cable Management Box - Long Flat (!!!) Cord
Size: 10 Ft, Color: White
Good Product. I have 16 x 6 x 5 cable management boxes. This is the first power strip that I have found with 4 USB ports with USB C. Because it is a single row of outlets, the power supplies for 2 laptops fit in the box. I have those, a lamp, phone, and iPAD, with 1 extra USB and 1 USB C cord plugged in. The low profile inside the larger ventilated box keeps things from overheating. It has taken a bit of adjusting to get everybody in the right place but it works great. The flat cable is smart. It fits under the corner of the rug without leaving a bump.

Great for Any Inside Area
Size: 10 Ft, Color: White
I bought two of these these for my office at work and the power is unstable and there are not many outlets (work for the schools) and the building is old - built in 1977. These have done the trick and I have had no issues with my electronics.

Perfect for my home office!
Size: 10 Ft, Color: Black
This 10 ft power strip has been a game changer for my home office. The cord is super long, which makes it easy to run along the wall or under furniture without any weird stretching. I really like the flat plug—it fits snugly behind my desk and doesn’t take up space like bulky ones do. The 7 outlets are spaced well so I can actually use all of them without the plugs getting in each other’s way. The 4 USB ports (especially the 2 USB-C ones) are super handy for charging my phone, tablet, and earbuds without needing extra adapters. Everything charges quickly, and it feels solid and well-made. I also like knowing it has surge protection built in, especially with how many electronics I have plugged in. Definitely recommend this if you want something that’s sleek, efficient, and built to handle a modern setup.
