The Beatles and The Beach Boys, who maintained a relationship of mutual respect yet healthy rivalry in the 1960s, came together decades later for a once-in-a-lifetime live collaboration between Paul McCartney and Brian Wilson. This special event, Open Hearts Clear Minds, took place on September 18, 2002, at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles as a benefit concert for landmine removal.
During the concert, Paul joined Brian—who at the time had miraculously revived his career and was actively performing live—on stage to perform “God Only Knows.” Later, during Paul’s own set, Brian joined him for “Let It Be.” It was a truly emotional “dream collaboration” that both fanbases had long awaited.
For this release, the rare performance has been sourced from the surviving original master and newly remixed and restored into rich, three-dimensional stereo. Originally recorded in narrow-range mono from an audience source, the sound has been upgraded with noise reduction and balance correction to achieve high-quality audio that can be considered a completely different listening experience from any previous source.
Although the two had maintained contact for years, this was their only live performance together—making this a truly one-of-a-kind historical recording.
As a bonus track, the CD also includes the remixed version of their 2004 duet “A Friend Like You” (previously unreleased on CD).
This is the latest Memorial Edition capturing the unforgettable “dream collaboration” of Paul McCartney and Brian Wilson.
