Lift Every Voice: Turning a Civil Rights Setback Into a New Vision of Social JusticeIn 1993, shortly after his inauguration, new President Bill Clinton nominated his old friend and classmate Lani Guinier to the prestigious and crucial post of Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights. In 1993, shortly after his inauguration, new President Bill Clinton nominated his old friend and classmate Lani Guinier to the prestigious and crucial post of Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights.

That nomination sparked an immediate firestorm of criticism from the right, labeling Professor Guinier the "Quota Queen" and assailing her for the ideas expressed in her publications, most of which her opponents had not read, or had taken out of context and misunderstood.

In the face of this concerted opposition -- what one friend of Guinier's called "a low-tech lynching" -- Clinton backed down, not only withdrawing her nomination, but having refused throughout to give her an opportunity to speak out in her own defense (and his). The result was a civil rights setback of monumental proportions.

Now, in this remarkable and important book, at once a memoir and insider's account of what really happened behind the closed doors of the Oval Office, the Justice Department, and the U.S. Senate, and an insightful look at the past, present, and future of civil rights in America, Lani Guinier at last breaks her silence.

Unsparing of her own mistakes and shrewdly perceptive about the overt and hidden agendas of those who opposed her, Professor Guinier shows how the president promptly abandoned his ambitious agenda for civil rights at the first hint of criticism from the media and Congress -- and how the civil rights movement suffered a major setback as a result.

More important, this book, in Professor Guinier's own words, is about "the battles fought in the belief that our racial history and our commitment to equality and democracy are essential parts of the same story. It has not always been a pretty story, nor one that follows an inevitable path.

"This book is not, however, an effort to settle scores. It's a story of the efforts of men and women who believe fundamentally in the promise of the American creed and who act on that belief in their everyday lives. These are people whose lives are without notoriety or fame, but in whose willingness to take risks we see the honor of real heroism."

Above all, Guinier goes on to describe how her experience at the hands of the press, the White House, and her congressional enemies has given her both a new voice and a renewed faith in the ongoing struggle for civil rights. Her book is an extraordinary account of just how the civil rights movement acquired its strength, drawn from the courage of "ordinary" people standing up against fearful odds for what was right, and from the commitment to make change happen from the bottom up, relying on the wisdom and common sense of those at grassroots level. Using her own nomination as a symbolic point of reference, she shows just how weak and divided the cause of civil rights has become, as its leaders have all too often been silenced by the very people they should be challenging.

Finally, she explains, in her own words, the truth about her political ideas -- which are rooted in "democracy" and its principles, not in quotas and affirmative action -- and examines the state of current race relations. Renewing her call for a national conversation on the issue of civil rights and social justice, this thought-provoking book is certain to spark a new and much-needed debate.

It delivers, but damn is it expensive
This product mainly shines because everything available at a brick and mortar shop is terrible - at least for men. This is great stuff, great hold without being greasy or turning your hair into spikes. No pungent odors. It's noted that it includes pine and sandalwood oil. There's definitely some pine, not getting any sandalwood. Regardless, it isn't a strong scent and that's how it should be. The tin is almost exactly the size of a snuff can. Expensive. But you don't really use much of it at one time.

2 complaints, otherwise great
This is a mostly great product. I only have 2 complaints - it’s really difficult to wash out, and the price. In my experience shampoo alone will not wash it out at all. Two-in-one products don't work. I have to use: 1. a shampoo 2. a conditioner 3. a shampoo again 4. More conditioner It does a really great job compared to other clays. I have short somewhat thin hair and it provides volume. It gives me the hold. I need all day. It smells great and it’s easy to work with. I wish it was cheaper. I feel like I’m paying extra for a cool looking tin. All that being said, I will be repeat customer

Just Okay...
This is an okay product. It works well for the first hour or two but then makes my hair very greasy - it feels like I haven't washed it in weeks. It's fairly sticky, which is great, but again it only lasts 2-3 hours for me before making my hair greasy. It smells great - I'll give them that. I'm glad it works for others but it's just not right for me.

Clay-Like Texture, All-Day Control
When my go-to pomade was discontinued, I had to start the search all over again. After seeing several ads for Highland Glacial Hair Clay Pomade on social media, I decided to give it a try and ordered a tin. Right out of the can, you can tell this product is different. It’s very thick—almost like actual clay. At first, I wasn’t sure how it would work with my shorter hair. Pro tip: lightly wet your hands before working it in. Once you add a little moisture and warm it up between your fingers, it spreads much more easily and evenly. Applying it to damp hair makes styling smooth and straightforward. When first applied, the hold feels strong and structured. As the day goes on, it relaxes slightly but still keeps your hair in place without looking stiff or overly styled. I appreciate that it maintains shape while allowing a more natural finish as the hours pass. It is more expensive than some other options out there, but in my opinion, the performance justifies the price. For reference, my hair is short—slightly longer than a typical military regulation cut—so this review reflects how it performs on shorter styles. Overall, I’m happy with the switch and would recommend Highland Glacial Hair Clay Pomade to anyone looking for a strong, workable hold with a natural feel.

Good Stuff!
Can’t say enough good things about Highland’s Glacial Clay Pomade! Don’t let your initial reaction to its appearance fool you. This stuff is great! In the tin, it’s fairly thick, but I put less than a dime size amount on my fingertips, place it in my palm, and then rub my palms together and it quickly turns into a very delicate gel that I work into my hair. Unlike other products that leave your hair crispy or with a sheen, this dries invisibly and allows you to continue to adjust and manage your hair throughout the day without looking like you have anything in at all. It’s so easy to use and keeps my hair looking great all day. Smells great too! I feel good knowing that I’m putting something on my body that’s 100% natural even down to the aluminum tin, which is fully recyclable. I’ve been using this along with Highland’s shampoo “The Wash“ for a few months now and I swear my hair has never been softer. I’m a big fan of this company and their products!
