"A memorable and moving book about a man -- indeed, a family -- of Fritzgeraldian proportions -- a distinguished and gripping American saga". -- Todd Gitlin, Chicago Tribune

Through the prism of her father's life as a lawyer and well-known political activist, Patricia Bosworth sheds light on an important era in modern American history -- from the heady, hope-filled days of Roosevelt's New Deal to the dawn of the Cold War.

In the course of a remarkable career, Bartley Crum represented movie stars and labor leaders, advised presidents and presidential hopefuls, emerged as a key figure in the creation of Israel, and became a forceful voice for civil rights. But when his defense of the Hollywood Ten made him a target of the FBI's andcommunist hysteria, public pressures and personal demons brought his once-charmed life to a tragic end. Interweaving public and private vignettes, his daughter's memoir re-creates Crum's life and times with rare and moving honesty.

"Consider this beautiful, saddening book on a par with Theodore Dreiser's An American Tragedy....It is an extraordinary document...written with blood and tears". -- Carolyn See, The Washington Post Book World

"Extraordinary...as beautifully written as any memoir I have ever read". -- Charles Kaiser, The New York Observer

Tiny print
Format: Hardcover
I bought this as a gift. She loves it, but the print is terribly small and the hard cover won't lay flat. I'm going to return it and order one that she can read without glasses and a magnifying glass.

Meaningful curriculum that I highly recommend.
Format: Paperback
Heard about this book from a friend who is a teacher. Her entire school is using this curriculum and seeing great results. I bought a copy and the poster set to try for myself. Students loved it! We had amazing discussions and my students' kindness level increased by 100 percent. I appreciate that there is a curriculum for public schools that takes the students to a deeper level of understanding about themselves and others. More of my colleagues are interested in this material and I think we will be doing a book study soon. Hoping it will be adopted by our curriculum department for the entire district. Pros: Easy to use,, researched based (not fluffy), poster set to support, nice work pages for students to use during the lesson, age appropriate, meaningful connections made between myself, students and between the students and their families. Well received by community. Cons: Lessons were slightly longer than 35 minutes but I added my own activities for additional interest. Not a good curriculum for educators who only want to focus on academics.
