Edith Hammond was born in San Francisco in 1876, into a society with limited rights for women. Even without rights such as the right to vote, Edith managed to graduate from Stanford and medical school to become one of San Francisco's earliest female physicians.
An early career woman, Edith faced similar challenges that 21st Century women face regarding attention to career and family. Her granddaughter, Lynn, writes the stories of Dr. Edith, called "Dockey" by family.
