Overview

Sedgefield is a small coastal town on the Garden Route in the Western Cape, sitting between a series of freshwater lakes and the Indian Ocean on one of the most ecologically rich stretches of the southern Cape coast. It is quieter and less developed than its neighbours George and Knysna, and attracts visitors drawn to its lagoons, bird life, beaches, and the weekly SLOW market. The Swartvlei Lagoon, one of the largest natural lakes in South Africa, defines much of the character of the surrounding landscape.

Map Design and Paper

The map is an original creation by our design studio at Africa Map Art. Data for this map has been compiled from various up-to-date sources including from the OpenStreetMap contributors. The map is available in four styles and on the following two paper options and canvas: a high quality 210gsm heavyweight coated paper with a matte finish, which achieves excellent colour and resolution and is perfect for framing;  a 260gsm photo paper with a smooth satin finish;  and a 350gsm strengthened canvas. All of the options are shipped in a cardboard roll for protection. The canvas is unstretched and unframed.

We welcome personalisation and customisation requests, such as highlighting of specific buildings or features, adjusting the colour scheme, or the addition of text and images.  Please contact us for a quote.

History

Sedgefield developed slowly through the twentieth century as a coastal retreat, its growth shaped almost entirely by the ribbon of land between the Swartvlei lake system and the sea. Unlike many Cape towns, it was not founded around farming, a church, or military need, but grew organically as holiday and residential development spread westward along the Garden Route from Knysna. The N2 highway running through its centre reinforces its linear form and has made it a natural stopping point for travellers on the route.

8/10 Front Pocket Wallet
Color: Black (Front Pocket)
It's a pleasing solution for me. The slim, pocketed design fits well in my front pocket. It probably fits other pockets well too. It's not perfect. But, it's solving for an imperfect solution that Apple is takling with their phones. Tap to pay with phones and digital ID will change the market for wallets. The physical size of cards limits how readily you can access any one card. It takes a bit of extra dexterity to pinch or slide some of the cards out. Ideally you'd have 4 on the outside, with remaining cards tucked in the center pocket. I just need more than 1/4 inch of card face to slide one out readily.

Size
Color: Black (Bifold)
It’s not a thick wallet, which is what my husband likes. Makes sitting or driving for long periods with it in his back pocket better. Has everything larger wallets have. Will purchase it again.

Rugged wallet built to last (even if wallets themselves are becoming obsolete)
Color: Black (Trifold), Color: Black (Trifold)
This is a really well-made wallet. If you’re familiar with Carhartt products, the construction here is exactly what you’d expect: tough, practical, and clearly designed to take some abuse. The material is "700D nylon duck fabric", which feels thick and durable—more like a piece of work gear than a fashion accessory. In the photos you can see the tight stitching, heavy canvas-like texture, and reinforced seams, all of which suggest it should last for years. It feels like the kind of wallet that could live in a back pocket, get sat on, tossed around, and still keep going. Inside, the layout is simple and functional. The see-through mesh ID window is one of my favorite touches—it makes it easy to show an ID without removing it. The card slots are snug and the trifold layout keeps everything organized. There’s also a small zippered pocket, which you can see in the photos along the side. It’s not huge, but it can hold a few coins or maybe a couple of small keys. The wallet also includes RFID blocking, which is nice if you’re concerned about wireless card scanning. On the flip side, that also means you can’t just tap the wallet against a reader for contactless payments. You’ll need to take the card out first. Carhartt also advertises water resistance, which makes sense given the nylon construction. Realistically, most of us aren’t dunking our wallets in water, but it’s nice to know it could handle rain or the random spill (though come-on! How often does that happen with a wallet??) One interesting thing: wallets themselves are starting to feel a little outdated. I rarely carry one anymore, and most of my family uses phone wallets or digital payments. But if you’re someone who still likes having a physical wallet for cards, ID, and some cash, this is a solid one. It’s a simple, rugged, no-nonsense wallet that should last a long time - very much in line with the Carhartt reputation. If you’re still in the wallet camp, this is a dependable choice. Plus it makes a nice gift.
