THE LEMON SEED
The lemon seed looked in the mirror a second time and it was true: she was getting a little dried out. She tapped her skin and it was toughening. “I think” she said nervously that night when the dishes were done, “I may be past the sprouting age.” She peered into the fire so the Southern citrus root weevil wouldn’t see her bottom lip shake. It isn’t easy realizing you’ll never be a tree. “A lot of my favorite people,” the weevil said kindly, “are not trees,” and held onto her hand tightly because they weren’t going to live forever.
