King of Saudi Arabia from 1964 to 1975. A tireless reformer, King Faisal opened to his doors to all the sects, cultures and tribes in his kingdom. He oversaw substantial modernisation of the state and is credited with rescuing the country's finances with policies that have today led to a prosperous and stable Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. An avid believer in education he encouraged and introduced education for women and girls in the teeth of opposition from the conservatives. Indeed his own children including his daughters are all very highly educated. Some of the women of King Faisal's family have been and still are a formidable force for reform in the kingdom, including his famous wife the late Queen Iffat bin-Thuniyan and his daughters Princess Lolowah Bint Faisal and Princess Haifa Bint Faisal. A pioneer of pan-Islamism he was a great supporter of and very sympathetic to the plight of Palestinians. He successfully stabilized the kingdom's bureaucracy and his reign had significant popularity among Saudis. King Faisal was assassinated by his nephew Faisal Bin Musaid.
