After stepping away from the limelight in the early 1970s, Gill re-emerged triumphantly in the 1990s, and is now back with huge success with both private collectors and galleries. His unique take on iconic imagery has been re-discovered and its place in art history re-affirmed. Described as a pioneer in the pop art movement, Gill’s works are visionary, timeless and universal. His iconic vibrant separations of light and shadow – typic of news photographs - are inspired by magazines like Time, Life and National Geographic and have been featured in numerous galleries. Find out more about pop art or, alternatively, shop more artwork by James Francis Gill here.

One of Pop Art’s hallmarks is its obsession with popular culture, and Gill’s "Women in Cars" series is firmly rooted in this. He began making the works in the 1960’s, when American magazines LIFE and TIME began printing paparazzi shots of film stars getting out of their cars. "Women in Cars" could offer something the magazines couldn’t – colour – and when the pieces began appearing in galleries, they were the epitome of cool modernity, and gave the public a chance to see celebrity in a new light. One of the earliest versions of the series, ‘Laughing Woman in car and Close Up’ was purchased by and exhibited in MoMa between works by Picasso and Odilon Redon. In the years 2020 to 2022, almost sixty years after his first works, at the age of over 85 years, acrylic paintings and studies are created by the colourist which show the “Women In Cars” manifested in all their colourfulness and timeless presence. These acrylic originals and studies are modern embodiments of an idea that was ahead of its time, anticipating the omnipresence of social media and the struggle to protect a personal and private space of existing. These modern pieces are steeped in the history of the pop art movement and bring a fresh and exciting insight into the workings of one of the last living pioneers of the subject. See more artwork from this collection here.

In this pop art classic, the presence of heavy bright colours is no surprise as this piece is the result of strong bold angular studies utilising primary colours. The different tones of blue are complimented by the bright light coming in different angles. This piece evokes a sense of serenity as the model is looking directly at the viewer. The combination of colours chosen by Gill is of particular notice. As a pop art artist, the bright blues, the model’s blonde hair and her bright pink lipstick are all elements common in this art style. Gill kept the main focus on the model and the car, with the background being almost out of focus which adds in depth to the piece. This iconic original is a statement piece in every collection!

One of the few body sunscreens that doesn't trigger my sensory issues
Size: 5 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
I have sensory sensitivities, so wearing sunscreen is usually a pretty unpleasant experience for me. I can't stand heavy textures, greasy finishes, or that sticky sunscreen feeling that seems to sit on top of the skin all day. I'm also bothered by mineral and matte sunscreens that dry my skin out. It's very hard to find a sunscreen as genuinely comfortable as this one is. I bought the Coola Sunblock Body Lotion because several reviews mentioned that it actually feels like a regular lotion once applied, but I honestly assumed it still wouldn't work for me. I was genuinely shocked the first time I used this. The texture feels silky and lightweight, absorbs quickly, and leaves my skin feeling soft rather than coated or oily. It really does wear more like a comfortable body lotion than a traditional sunscreen, and I don't notice any residue or oily feel at all, which is amazing. I also love that it's fragrance-free, which makes it even easier for me to tolerate, especially with sensitive skin and sensory issues. Coola Sunblock Body Lotion is one of the very few body sunscreens I've tried that I actually enjoy wearing, and it works perfectly. I am very fair and burn easily, but I had no burning or redness on my first outside day of the summer while wearing this. It's sunscreen that works and that I can actually wear with zero discomfort. Amazing.

Im 63, with fair and sensitive skin. I love this high strength sunscreen that isn't greasy and doesn't have added ingredients and perfumes that bother me and make me break out.

Expensive, but worth it
Size: 5 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
What's the best sunscreen? The sunscreen you'll use consistently. I like Coola because it feels like moisturizer, not sticky gross sunscreen. It's pricey, but I think you get what you pay for with Coola.

Great sunscreen, but too pricey!
Size: 5 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
I love COOLA products. They are a good substitute for my favorite sunscreens by Bare Republic - which was discontinued. Unfortunately COOLA products are very pricey. For that reason, I must use other brands where it makes sense. Trader Joe's spray sunscreen works very well and is $5.99. Coppertone Water Babies works for water sports. I'm saving my $28 COOLA lotion sunscreen for when I need a non greasy odor-free sunscreen, for example when I spend time in the sun followed by lunch out or shopping.
