How to install Lenovo VMware Horizon v. 8.0 Advanced Edition

Before you begin, confirm that your virtualization environment meets Horizon 8.0 prerequisites and that your Lenovo hardware stack is validated for Horizon deployments. Ensure you have active access to the 3-year OEM subscription and a way to activate the 100 named-user licenses within your VMware portal or Lenovo software portal. Use these steps as a practical guideline to deploy efficiently while maximizing performance and reliability.

Step 1: Prepare the virtualization foundation. Validate compatibility of your Lenovo servers, storage, and networking with VMware vSphere and Horizon 8.0. Verify that you have the latest drivers, firmware, and security patches installed on hosts, and configure your vCenter and ESXi clusters for Horizon workloads. Plan network topology to support Horizon components, including Connection Server, Security Server or Unified Access Gateway, and composer or instant clone services as applicable.

Step 2: Activate the subscription and licensing. Access the Lenovo or VMware licensing portal associated with your OEM package. Enter the 100 named user licenses and confirm the 3-year subscription period. Retrieve the necessary license keys or activation tokens and associate them with your Horizon deployment. Keep documentation handy for audit and renewal purposes.

Step 3: Install Horizon components. Deploy the Horizon Connection Server(s) and ancillary components in your environment per VMware guidelines. For larger deployments, consider a load-balanced topology with redundant Connection Servers. Configure initial desktops and application pools, using Instant Clones for rapid provisioning and App Volumes for flexible app delivery. Integrate User Environment Manager to standardize user profiles and policies across devices.

Step 4: Configure identity, access, and security policies. Connect Horizon to your directory services (such as Active Directory) for user authentication and entitlement. Define access policies, MFA requirements, and firewall rules to protect connections from endpoints. Implement role-based access controls (RBAC) for administrators and ensure compliance with your organization’s data protection standards.

Step 5: Create desktop and application catalogs. Build desktop pools and application catalogs that align with your workforce needs. Assign the 100 named users to appropriate pools, set up persistent or non-persistent desktops as required, and tailor user profiles for a consistent experience across devices, whether employees are on Windows, macOS, or thin clients.

Step 6: Validate, monitor, and optimize. Run end-to-end testing of logins, application delivery, desktop performance, and roaming profile behavior. Use Horizon monitoring tools and your existing IT operations platform to track latency, session density, and resource utilization. Apply updates and patches as part of your 3-year subscription to maintain security and performance, and schedule regular health checks to prevent downtime.

Frequently asked questions

Q: What does 100 named users mean?

A: 100 named users are individual licenses allocated to specific users rather than concurrent sessions. Each named user can access Horizon desktops and apps as permitted by your subscription and policy settings, ensuring predictable licensing and user accountability.

Q: What does the 3-year subscription include?

A: The 3-year subscription includes software updates, security patches, and vendor-supported assistance. It provides ongoing access to Horizon enhancements, performance improvements, and technical support to help minimize downtime and maintain compatibility with evolving IT environments.

Q: Is this license suitable for on-premises, cloud, or hybrid deployments?

A: Horizon 8.0 Advanced Edition supports flexible deployment models, including on-premises, private cloud, and hybrid configurations. Your chosen topology should align with your organization’s data governance, latency requirements, and IT strategy. The OEM package is designed to work seamlessly within Lenovo-enabled infrastructures.

Q: Can I add more named users later?

A: Yes. If your needs grow, you can purchase additional named-user licenses or extend your subscription. Contact Lenovo or your VMware licensing partner to discuss options and pricing for scaling the license count within the existing OEM arrangement or via an updated contract.

Q: Does the package include installation services?

A: The OEM software subscription and support primarily covers licensing and ongoing vendor support. While it does not typically include hands-on installation services, Lenovo and VMware offer professional services or partner-based deployment assistance if you require expert installation, configuration, and optimization tailored to your environment.

Q: Are there specific hardware requirements I should know?

A: Horizon deployment benefits from validated hardware and firmware. For Lenovo systems, ensure your servers, storage, and networking devices are tested and supported for Horizon 8.0. Always verify compatibility lists and firmware versions with Lenovo and VMware to maximize performance and stability.

Great toy for two big German Shepherds
Color: Brown
We only buy Tuffy dog toys now because we have one German Shepherd, and we often watch our daughter's GSD too, and the two dogs tear anything else apart in minutes. Tuffy toys are BY FAR superior to any other dog toy we have tried. That being said, some Tuffy toys seem to last longer than others with the two dogs, and this one has been pretty good! We've had it for a few weeks now, and it's just now starting to show some white (stuffing) where their teeth have pierced the top of the toy. That's pretty good, considering they play tug of war with it and can tear into toys pretty hard. If it were just our one dog, I think it would last a lot longer because it's the tug of war between the two of them that does them in faster. Even so, when they do manage to tear the fabric in vulnerable places, I just pull the stuffing out from that area, and they continue to play with it, sometimes for months! This one is better than some other Tuffy toys too because it has lots of areas where there is already more fabric and reinforced seams than stuffing, like all the legs on the side, the tail, and even the pincers. So far, they haven't been able to tear into those at all. Just a bit on the top of the head, and so far, no stuffing coming out yet. This one is a big win for us! When they finally do do it in, I will turn around and buy another Scorch the Scorpion right away!

Tuffy Desert Phrog vs Lola
Color: Green Leaping Phrog, Color: Green Leaping Phrog
Just a little background about my dog. Lola is a 5 year old corgi-terrier mix with jaws of steal. Lesser stuffed toys have met death in under 5 minutes. Tennis balls last less than a day. Rope toys that do not have frayed ends might possibly last a week (frayed ends never stand a chance). The only toys that she has not managed to destroy are her Kong, a Kong bone, and a racquet ball. I figured I would document the life span of Phrog (Tuffy Scale: 9) before making my final judgement on it’s durability. Day 1 - Phrog Arrives! Lola was very excited about the arrival of Phrog and immediately went into destruction mode. Phrog did sustain a little damage before we were able to bribe her to drop Phrog and get her understand that he was more fun to play fetch with than to mutilate. The white you see in the picture is not stuffing, but the second layer of defense for the toy. The fact that my living room is not full of stuffing and I didn’t have to pry a squeaker out of my dog’s mouth, I’d say Phrog wins the Day 1 challenge. Day 9 - Phrog has sustained a little more damage, but not anything life threatening. His side wound is a little bit larger and one of his eyes is half ripped off. For safety reasons, I am going to finish removing the damaged eye and some loose thread from various places. Other than that, Phrog is still holding up and holds top toy spot. I have also found him very useful for dealing with anxiety; the squeaker can often distract her from her stressors and Phrog takes the abuse of her frustrations. Day 16 - Phrog is starting to show signs of mortal wounds. Lola has made it through the thicker layer around his arm and I can see the stuffing. It is only a matter of time before gets all the way through. Day 60 - Phrog still lives!!! I have done some surgery on Phrog to reinforce the fabric around his arms, but Franken-Phrog is still the favorite of all of the toys. She will even get brave enough to rescue Phrog from the evil vacuum when he is kidnapped and tortured. I am thinking about purchasing Phrog II for the inevitable day when Phrog goes off to the pet toyland in the sky, but for now, there is only one Phrog for Lola.

Long lasting play toy!
Color: Multicolor
Tuffy toys in general are great and they are a pretty good deal on Amazon. They are not indestructible, and if your dogs use them as chew toys they will eventually break through. My dogs have had this Armadillo since Christmas (and they do chew on it some) and the only thing missing is an ear. They like to play tug-of-war with it a lot. This is a bigger toy, but even my forty pound dog plays with it. I would not recommend this toy for dogs smaller than Border Collie size. You can make these Tuffy toys last longer if you don't allow your dogs to chew them--when your dogs starts chewing on non-chew toys trade them for a chew toy and when you catch your dog chewing on a chew-approved toy reward them for chewing. Eventually your dog will catch on and realize that if they want to chew there are certain toys that are allowed for that. In addition to being a great play toy this is a pretty cute toy too!

Not Tuff
Color: Black Yellow Phrog, Color: Black Yellow Phrog
Absolutely terrible and not “tuff” at all. My chocolate lab had this thing destroyed in less than two hours. I would not recommend these for the price.
